CSIR - Institute Of Microbial Technology, Chandigarh CSIR-Institute of Microbial Technology (IMTech), Chandigarh is a research institute of the Council o ft. to its researchers. area (the G.N.

A research institute in the frontline areas of biology and biotechnology of microorganisms, with state of the art facilities. Established in 1984, the Institute of Microbial Technology (IMTECH) is one among the chain of 37 national laboratories, 6 units and 39 outreach centres of the Council of Scientific & Industrial Research. Set-up to be a fore-runner in the niche domain of microbial biotechnology, the Institute in its initial years functioned from a start-up laboratory that provided a truly world-class R&D ambience in an area of over 10,000 sq. In September, 1989, upon completion of the permanent campus, the Institute shifted to occupy an area of about 47 acres, of which the labs covered 22 acres and the residential campus 25 acres. The Institute covering a built up area of about 3.60 lakh sq. ft., is spread over four main buildings, namely, Main R&D block, Fermentation block, Animal House, Workshop, Stores and Services area, several service building including a guest house and Cafeteria. Recently another block of almost 50000 sq. Ramachandran Protein Centre) has been added, to cater to R&D in all aspects of Protein science and engineering. The Institute provides laboratories which are functionally modular and offer large, air-conditioned, clean research areas to all the scientists. The Institute's primary asset is a team of more than 55 highly motivated scientists, with a majority of them having several years of training in world renowned laboratories. Supported by more than 300 well trained technical staff and graduate students, these scientists have built strong peer credibility both in basic and application-oriented broad thematic areas of Molecular biology and microbial genetics, Cell biology and immunology, Protein science and engineering, and Fermentation technology and applied microbiology. These overarching focus areas required enabling research facilities, structures and practices which IMTECH has created over the years, recognized nationally to be the best, and globally at par with the best. This required a visionary approach and objectives with a long term mandate of scientific relevance. IMTECH’s team of scientists having cutting edge R&D expertise in the areas of: Cloning & expression of recombinant / engineered proteins & their scale-up, Understanding / manipulating proteins and their engineering, Protein structure determination through X-ray crystallography, Molecular microbiology of pathogens especially with respect to drug resistance & vaccine development, Immunology of infectious diseases, Yeast Genetics, Screening of microorganisms for novel enzymatic activities and strain improvement, Bioinformatics & high end computational biology, Microbial taxonomy and metagenomics, and allied areas like technology and business management and intellectual property protection. That IMTECH could attract and gather a highly motivated and creative team of scientists speaks volumes of the ambience, achievements and a defined focus which are associated with it.

At CSIR-IMTECH, Dr. E. Senthil Prasad and his team are developing an integrated technology for inulin extraction from chicory plant roots and inulinase enzyme production and purification.
The technology involves:
➤ Inulin extraction: Processing of dried chicory root through extraction, filtration and neutralization.
➤ Purification: Activated charcoal treatment, concentration and precipitation for obtaining dried inulin powder.
➤ Inulinase production: Microbial production of inulinase enzyme using fermentation-based processes.
➤ Enzyme purification: Development of downstream processing approaches for recovery and purification of the enzyme.
➤ Scale-up: Demonstration of a fermentation scale-up pathway from shake-flask culture to 7 L, 50 L and 500 L fermenters for inulinase enzyme production.

The technology provides an integrated platform for value addition of chicory root and microbial enzyme production, with potential applications in the development of prebiotic and functional food ingredients.

The Institutional Ethics Committee (IEC), CSIR-IMTECH, successfully organised a workshop on Good Clinical Practices (GCP) on 26th October 2026 to strengthen the understanding of ethical and regulatory requirements in biomedical and clinical research involving human participants. The Program was attended by IEC members and all scientists. The program commenced with inaugural address by Prof. Arunaloke Chakrabarti, Chairman, IEC-IMTECH, followed by a technical session. Prof. Bikash Medhi, Professor, Department of Pharmacology, PGIMER delivered lectures on “Basic Concepts of Indian and International Good Clinical Practices (GCP),” addressing the regulatory framework and ethical principles guiding research involving human participants in India and on “Regulatory Roadmap and ICMR Ethical Guidelines For Biomedical Research,” providing an overview of the principles and standards governing ethical and quality clinical research. Dr Ajay Praksh, Additional Professor, Department of Pharmacology, PGIMER, discussed “Study Design and Randomised Controlled Trials (RCTs),” highlighting the importance of robust study design and scientific validity. Collectively, the sessions offered valuable insights for both researchers and IEC members and were followed by interactive discussions.

The programme concluded with the closing remarks by the Director, Dr Alka Rao, who expressed her appreciation for the trainers Prof. Bikash Medi and Dr Ajay Prakash, and extended congratulations to the organising team. The session concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr Rashmi Kumar, Member Secretary, IEC-IMTECH.
