ASU Staff Take on Three Peaks Challenge to Transform Patient Care
Staff from the Acute Surgical Unit (ASU) are stepping far beyond the ward this summer, taking on the grueling 3 Peaks Helvellyn Challenge—conquering Helvellyn, Lower Man and Whiteside on 26 July, all in the name of improving the care and dignity of their patients.
In just 24 hours, this incredible team will push their bodies to the limit, climbing mile after mile across challenging terrain. But for them, this is about something far bigger than the mountains, it’s about the people they care for every single day.
Their mission is to raise ÂŁ3,000 to fund specialist patient weighing scales, equipment that may seem simple, but has a profound impact. These scales will help ensure patients are treated with greater dignity, comfort and safety, while also supporting more accurate clinical care during what can often be difficult and vulnerable moments.
Every step they take is inspired by what they witness on the ward.

“We see first-hand how much the right equipment matters,” the team shared. “This isn’t just a challenge, it’s our way of going the extra mile for our patients, making their experience safer, more comfortable, and more respectful.”

For patients, this equipment means less distress. For staff, it means being able to provide the highest standard of care with greater ease and compassion.
But they can’t do it alone.
Community support will make all the difference. Every donation, no matter how small, brings them closer to their goal and directly contributes to improving patient care in a meaningful and immediate way.
The ASU team is calling on individuals, local businesses and community groups to rally behind them, cheer them on, and be part of something truly impactful.

Discover Chapel Island with Bay Hospitals Charity on 5 September 2026
Experience the magic of Morecambe Bay by joining Bay Hospitals Charity on a memorable guided walk to Chapel Island, a hidden gem in the Leven Estuary surrounded by vast, ever‑changing sands.
Setting off from Canal Foot near Ulverston, the journey takes you across the open shoreline, offering spectacular views and a real sense of the Bay’s scale and beauty. After crossing the River Leven, we will make our way to Chapel Island itself, where walkers can take time to explore and spot the diverse wildlife that calls the island home. You will also pass the historic Collins Weir, a long‑lost cart route that resurfaced in 2024 after more than 70 years beneath the sands and is expected to be visible again this year.
The route loops back to Canal Foot and covers approximately two to six miles, with the walk taking around three hours in total.
Although the walk is suitable for most people, a reasonable level of fitness is recommended. Safety is paramount, and you will be led across the shifting sands by Raymond Porter, the Bay’s highly respected and Royally appointed King’s Guide.
