After standing silent for more than 15 years, the historic clock at Newburgh Priory is ticking once again.

Frozen at 10:59 after frost damage left one of its stone dials displaced, the Victorian clock above the gatehouse has now been carefully restored thanks to a £17,000 conservation project.

Made in York in 1858 by Darling and Wood, the clock has been a part of life at Newburgh Priory for almost 170 years. Following repairs to the tower and a meticulous restoration of the mechanism, it is once again keeping time and striking on the hour.

As Paul Robson of the Estate put it, seeing the clock working again is “like welcoming back an old friend”.
