A recent controversy surrounding Forest House Books, a small Calgary bookstore, provides an interesting lesson.

The bookstore used AI-generated artwork.

People objected.

People commented.

The discussion grew beyond the bookstore's local community.

Here's the part we think deserves more attention:

The obvious AI was in the artwork.

But the discussion was happening on Facebook, and Meta itself says AI systems help rank the content people see. Those systems use signals from people's activity to help determine what may be relevant to them.

That doesn't mean we can say Facebook's AI caused this particular controversy to spread. We can't.

But it does raise a useful question:

How much AI do you interact with without realizing it?

AI isn't only ChatGPT.

It isn't only generated artwork.

Sometimes AI is working quietly behind an ordinary service you already use.

And that's why “AI good” versus “AI bad” isn't a particularly useful conversation.

Let's ask better questions.

Where is AI?
What is it doing?
What information does it use?
What are the benefits?
What are the costs?
Where should the boundaries be?

You can oppose AI-generated art.

You can support it.

You can fall somewhere in between.

But before deciding where you stand, learn where AI already stands in your life.

Because AI isn't only the picture you can see.

Sometimes it's part of the reason you're seeing the picture in the first place.

Today marks a historic moment in Alberta — a moment that over 75% of Albertans believe should never have been necessary. Our provincial flag, a symbol that belongs to millions, is finally returning to its rightful place within Canada.

For too long, a flag meant to represent pride, heritage, and community was misused as a symbol of hate and racism. Many true Albertans stopped flying it altogether, worried that displaying it would make them appear to support separatism. A symbol of home became a symbol of division.

But today, that changes. Today, we reclaim our flag. We reclaim its meaning. We reclaim our identity.

From this day forward, Albertans can proudly say:
We are Canadian.

I’ve seen this circulating, so I wanted to share the verified info:
𝗘𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗔𝗹𝗯𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗮 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗺𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻.
The “R” and “D” markings and “poll manager” roles mentioned in the viral post are from U.S. elections and don’t exist in Alberta. Here, ballots are routinely initialed by election officers as part of the standard process, and that does not disqualify them.

It’s always smart to stay alert, but this particular warning isn’t accurate. If in doubt, Elections Alberta’s official channels have the correct procedures.

Studies consistently show:
• 𝗙𝗮𝗹𝘀𝗲 𝗰𝗹𝗮𝗶𝗺𝘀 𝘀𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗱 𝗳𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿 because they are more dramatic.
• 𝗖𝗼𝗿𝗿𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝘀𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗱 𝘀𝗹𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿 because they are calmer and more technical.
• When both appear together, 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝗮𝗹𝘀𝗲 𝗰𝗹𝗮𝗶𝗺 𝗼𝗳𝘁𝗲𝗻 𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗸𝘀 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗴𝗹𝘆 unless the correction is placed first or visually emphasized.

The Breakdown didn’t create the misinformation — they’re highlighting Elections Alberta’s response — but the layout still gives the false claim more “screen real estate.”

Bots amplify 𝗳𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀, not large ones.
Why?
Because fringe movements:
• are easier to influence
• have fewer gatekeepers
• respond strongly to attention
• can be made to look larger than they are
• create disproportionate political noise

A small separatist movement is a perfect target.

Media and pop‑culture do a lot to shape how we talk about generations, but they often exaggerate differences and flatten millions of people into one stereotype. The problem is that many people absorb those narratives without ever stepping back to look honestly at what’s happening in their own lives. They cling to the stereotype instead of recognizing their own patterns, choices, and responsibilities.
