Community is built by people who roll up their sleeves, get their hands dirty and put their hearts into making things happen!

That’s what I love about today’s Moresby Street Festival… so many people giving their time, energy and skills to bring our community together.

Helping people from all walks of life is part of my everyday life. Whether it’s volunteering with RAISE me up, providing pro bono legal advice or supporting local initiatives through Cornerstone Legal, I’m grateful to be able to contribute.

Raise Me Up is now helping feed around 365 people each week!! It’s an extraordinary effort made possible by dedicated volunteers and supporters. Through Cornerstone Legal, I’m also proud to sponsor today’s festival and fund the signage you’ve seen around town.

A huge thank you to Rory Murray for his fantastic coordination, Isabella Robertson for the enormous amount she gives to so many community organisations, and former councillors Nic Coveney, Hayley Prendiville, and Jennifer Nevard, who are here lending a hand with the Town Team crew. Everyone puts in 110%, and it shows.

To everyone setting up, running activities, feeding people, packing away and doing the countless jobs behind the scenes… I thank you. You make days like this possible.

Today I added my thumbprint to the Raise Me Up commitment tree with this pledge:

“I pledge to lend a hand, listen with kindness, and help people feel seen, valued and supported.”

That’s a commitment I’ll keep putting into practice.

This is what community is all about. And this is what makes my heart happy. 💛

A fantastic evening listening to former WA Premier Colin Barnett reflect on his years in public life.

Hearing the stories behind the headlines…the challenges, the difficult decisions, the setbacks and the successes was a great reminder that leadership is rarely easy, but it is always about serving something bigger than yourself.

Thank you, Colin, for sharing your experiences so openly, and for taking the time to sign a copy of your book. It was a privilege to meet you and hear your perspective on public service.

There is always something to learn from those who have dedicated themselves to our state and our communities.

Over the past 12 months or so, the City of South Perth has seen an extraordinary turnover of elected members and senior governance personnel. This isn’t about personalities, factions or political differences. Healthy organisations can accommodate differing views.

The fact that six councillors have now either resigned or chosen not to return, together with the departure of numerous senior governance and legal staff, should give our community pause. It points to issues that are deeper and more entrenched than any disagreement between individuals.

Here you will see six former councillors have released a joint statement. We each reached our decisions independently, but we felt residents deserved to understand that there were common concerns about the governance environment and our ability to effectively serve the community.

My hope is that this statement helps shift the conversation away from personalities and towards the broader governance issues that need to be addressed. I remain grateful for the opportunity to have served our community and remain committed to advocating for transparency, accountability and good governance.

After careful consideration, I have today tendered my resignation as Councillor for the Como Ward at the City of South Perth.

My decision follows a lengthy period of reflection regarding the direction of the organisation, the effectiveness of its governance and the priorities reflected in the City’s most recent budget.

The recent budget was a significant factor in my decision. At a time when households and businesses continue to face cost-of-living pressures, residents are being asked to fund a substantial rates increase without, in my view, receiving a commensurate increase in services or meaningful action on the issues they consistently identify as priorities.

More broadly, I have become increasingly concerned about the governance environment within the organisation. During my term, and before it, residents have witnessed ongoing disputes, organisational instability, significant staff turnover and the resignation of multiple elected members.

Over recent months, it has become increasingly apparent to me that the culture within the Council chamber has deteriorated significantly. Since the 2025 local government elections, entrenched factionalism, disputes and an increasingly adversarial environment have made it difficult for councillors to work collaboratively and constructively in the best interests of the community.

While reasonable people may differ on the causes, I have reached the conclusion that I can no longer effectively influence outcomes from within the Council chamber.

I was elected to represent my community and to advocate for transparency, accountability and practical outcomes. While I remain proud of many of the initiatives I supported during my time on Council, I believe the time has come for me to pursue those objectives through other avenues.

This resignation should not be interpreted as a withdrawal from public life. My commitment to South Perth and to public service remains unchanged. However, I now feel I can do more good outside of the Council than within it.

I thank the residents who placed their trust in me and the many community members who have supported me throughout my time.

Vale William “Bill” Grayden OAM

It is with great sadness that I acknowledge the passing of Bill Grayden – a man whose life was defined by service, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to community.

Bill’s contribution to South Perth, and to Western Australia more broadly, is difficult to put into words. He served his community in so many ways over many decades, always with a quiet determination to make things better for others. His legacy is not just in what he did, but in how he did it – with humility, generosity, and a genuine care for people.

I had the privilege of meeting Bill at pre-poll last year. It was something I had hoped to do for some time, knowing he had good days and bad. When he came out, I was struck by his presence – warm, thoughtful, and deeply engaged. It is a moment I will always remember.

In a world where there is often a lot of noise, Bill’s life reminds us of something far more important: the value of simply showing up, rolling up your sleeves, and giving back. Not for recognition, but because it matters.

His example has given me a renewed appreciation for what it means to serve a community. It is not always easy, and it is not always understood, but it is always worthwhile.

If there is one way we can honour Bill’s legacy, it is this: find a way to contribute. Whether it’s through volunteering, supporting a local organisation, helping a neighbour, or simply being present – our communities are stronger when people step forward.

My thoughts are with Bill’s family and all those who had the privilege of knowing him.

Rest in peace, Bill. Your legacy will endure.
