Over 500 locals submitted objections to the clearing of koala habitat at Ormiston College. They were ignored.
Last week, the College began clearing 650 trees that are home to hundreds of koalas.
Here’s what happened:
❌ 0.81ha of mapped core koala habitat is being destroyed inside a Koala Priority Area
❌ Offset plantings don’t meet the required 3:1 ratio under Queensland’s Environmental Offsets Policy
❌ The federal environment department warned the project needed referral under the EPBC Act, but it proceeded anyway
Fewer than 80,000 koalas remain in the wild. Mature trees take decades to replace, and no offset planting can undo what’s already been lost.
