Bowen Delta Rural Fire Brigade was among several crews called to assist with the fire at Guthalungra on Thursday, working alongside our mates from:

🚒 Bowen Urban Fire Brigade
🚒 Abbot Point Rural Fire Brigade
🚒 Brisk Bay Heronvale Rural Fire Brigade
🚒 Gumlu Rural Fire Brigade
🚒 Cape Upstart Rural Fire Brigade

The fire burnt through an estimated 600 acres, with the fire eventually jumping the Bruce Highway.

The highway was closed to allow crews to safely undertake firefighting operations, with a big thank you to Queensland Police Service (QPS) for their assistance with traffic management and road closures.

A water-bombing helicopter was also on standby, ready to assist if required. Thankfully, it wasn't needed on this occasion.

A huge effort from everyone involved, with multiple brigades working together to manage the fire and protect the surrounding area.

It's great to see our local brigades working together and supporting each other when the call comes in.

A big thank you to all crews who attended and to everyone who helped keep the community safe. 👏🔥

🚒🔥 THREE CALLOUTS, ONE BIG DAY! 🔥🚒

The boys are finally on their way home from Dingo Beach after a massive day that turned into a big night! 💪

The day started with a couple of smaller callouts around the Delta, and just as the crew had made it back to the station, firecom were calling on the radio!! This time, we were heading south to lend a hand to our mates at Gloucester Rural Fire Brigade. 🚒

The crew spent the night assisting with backburning operations and mopping up, helping get the fire situation under control. 🔥

Great to catch up with our other mates from Heronvale RFB and Cannonvale- Cannonvalley Rural Fire Service out on the fireground! Always good to see everyone working together when the community needs us. 🤝

Three callouts, plenty of hours on the tools, and a big effort from everyone involved!

We reckon the fellas won't need much rocking to sleep when they finally get home! 😂😴

🔥🚒 GUTHALUNGRA FIRE – A BIG THANK YOU 🚒🔥

A huge shout-out and thank you to everyone who attended the Guthalungra fire and put in the hard yards to get the fire under control.

Crews from Bowen, Ayr and Townsville all worked together, with a great show of teamwork across the region.

From the crews on the ground, to those operating appliances, supporting the backburning operations and working alongside the aerial resources — thank you for your efforts, professionalism and commitment.

These jobs take a big team effort, and it was fantastic to see crews from across the region come together when needed.

🚒🔥 GUTHALUNGRA FIRE UPDATE 🔥🚒

The highway is currently open to one lane alternating between north and south as crews work to contain the fire in the Guthalungra area.

Firefighters are utilising backburning operations and aerial support to slow the fire’s spread and bring it under control.

🚒 11 appliances are currently on scene, with crews working together to manage the fire.

⚠️ Please avoid the area and do not attempt to travel through the closure. Allow emergency crews room to operate safely.

AVOID SMOKE - Guthalungra (near Bowen) - fire as at 8:52am Sunday, 27 September 2026

Warning level: ADVICE

Warning area: Guthalungra and surrounding areas

Thick smoke is affecting Guthalungra and surrounding areas. This is from a fire burning between the Bruce Highway and Glenore Road, Guthalungra.

Fire crews are currently on scene. Protect yourself from the impacts of smoke.

What you should do:

- If the smoke is thick where you are, stay inside and close windows and doors.
- If you need medication to help you breathe keep it close.
- If you are worried about your health call your doctor or 13 HEALTH (13 432 584). If it is an emergency, call Triple Zero (000) now.
- If you are affected by the smoke you may need to leave the area.
- Check for warning updates often.
- Do not fly drones around the fire as they affect firefighting.

Impacts:

- No properties are at risk.
- Smoke could make it hard for some people to breathe and can cause health issues.
- Some roads may be closed or impacted by smoke. It could be hard to see. You may need to drive a different way.

The heightened fire conditions certainly lived up to expectations on Day 1! 😬

At around 3pm, our crew was called to assist our mates from Bowen QLD Fire and Rescue at a grass fire burning alongside the Bruce Highway.

Thankfully, there were no structures under threat, but the wind was causing plenty of headaches, with the fire moving quickly and making conditions difficult for crews. 💨🔥

Our crew initially worked on the southern side of the fire using water and blowers, but with the wind continuing to push the fire, that proved unsuccessful.

So, it was time to change tactics and move into back-burning operations to help bring the fire under control.

By around 6pm, the fire was under control, followed by a solid mop-up operation before the crew finally packed up and headed home at around 8pm. 👨‍🚒💪

A massive effort from everyone involved, and a great job by all crews working together to get the fire under control and keep the Bruce Highway and surrounding areas safe. 🚒🔥
