🎉 Two projects. Two national shortlists. One very thrilled regional museum!

We’re delighted that Bendigo Military Museum has been shortlisted in two categories at the 2026 Australian Museums and Galleries Association (AMaGA) Awards:

🏅 Community Connection — Mapmakers of Fortuna Villa
🏅 Digital Excellence — Faces of Peace

For our humble regional museum, being recognised at a national level alongside such incredible museums, galleries and projects is an enormous honour. We’re so proud to see the stories of our local veterans and service community celebrated in this way.

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who shared their stories, our creative partners, volunteers and supporters. This recognition belongs to you too.

We’re very much looking forward to heading to Canberra to celebrate with colleagues from across the galleries, libraries, archives and museums (GLAM) sector, and to learn more about the other remarkable projects shortlisted.

Congratulations to all our fellow finalists — we’re thrilled to be in your company! 👏

Throughout history, the greatest strength of our service personnel has always been the person standing right next to them.

Mateship isn’t just a historical concept—it’s a commitment to looking after one another, both during service and long after.

Today is . You don’t have to be an expert to make a difference; you just have to be a good mate and really listen.

If you notice a veteran, a family member, or a friend in our Bendigo community acting a bit differently, trust your gut and ask, “Are you OK?”

Every stop of our Storyscape immerses you in a different story.

At the Vietnam stop, a Veteran recalls that the moment you really had to worry was when everything went silent. As he speaks, the sound of helicopters grows louder and louder—then suddenly stops.

It is this combination of first-person testimony, music and carefully crafted sound design that makes Storyscape more than a collection of recorded interviews. Each soundscape places you within the memory, helping you feel something of the atmosphere and emotion behind the words.

At other stops, you might hear a peacekeeper reflect on serving in Rwanda, or be welcomed to Country by Dja Dja Wurrung Elder and Vietnam Veteran Uncle Graham Atkinson—connecting culture, service and place.

Located throughout the Bendigo Military Museum and the surrounding Arts Precinct, every stop offers a different voice, story and experience. Explore the soundscapes inside the museum, or download the app and discover the outdoor stops at your own pace, 24 hours a day.

🎧 Bring your headphones for the outdoor experience
📱 Each soundscape activates as you enter its location
📍 Begin at the Bendigo Military Museum, 37–39 Pall Mall, Bendigo

Storyscape was created in partnership with Aimee Chapman and David Gagliardi of Sonic Gold and Caleb Maxwell of Hebron Films, with support from the Australian Government’s Saluting Their Service Commemorative Grants Program.

Storyscape invites you to slow down, listen and experience the Bendigo Military Museum in a completely different way.

This is not a traditional audio guide. As you move through the museum, immersive soundscapes connect the objects and photographs around you with the voices of the people whose lives they represent. Veterans, community members and cultural leaders share their experiences in their own words, reminding us that no two experiences of service are ever the same.

And the storytelling doesn’t end at the museum doors.

Storyscape also includes an outdoor experience across Bendigo’s Arts Precinct. Simply download the app, put on your headphones and walk between the story locations. The soundscapes respond to where you are, bringing local history into the streets and places where it unfolded.

The outdoor experience is free and available 24 hours a day, seven days a week—no museum ticket or booking required.

Created in partnership with Aimee Chapman and David Gagliardi of Sonic Gold and Caleb Maxwell of Hebron Films, Storyscape brings history, technology and art together to create something deeply human: a living collection of voices, memories and stories that stay with you.

We’re delighted to see PERSONA: CONTEMPORARY VETERAN ARTISTS being featured in today’s with some powerful reflections from Veteran artist Glenn Burnell-May

“Military service can present human beings with their most extreme experiences. It leaves scars and it can take us away from our authentic selves...”

Glenn spoke openly about the strength of the military identity - and the profound sense of uncertainty that can follow when it is left behind.

“When we move away from Defence, when we transition out, we can often feel very lost.”

It is here that art can become transformative. Creative practice provides veterans with a way to process their experiences, rediscover parts of themselves obscured by service and begin shaping an identity beyond the military and the uniform.

Glenn’s words speak directly to the heart of PERSONA: the power of art to reveal the person beyond the uniform and allow veterans to reclaim and share their stories in their own way.

Thank you to Glenn for speaking with such honesty, and to Adam Carswell and the Bendigo Times for sharing his important reflections.

PERSONA is presented in partnership with and is on display at the until 31st January 2027.

Did you know the 38th Battalion was formed in Bendigo?

Raised in early 1916, the battalion overcame early setbacks, including a severe meningitis outbreak, before training in Australia and Britain and deploying to the Western Front.

The 38th Battalion fought in some of the First World War's most significant battles, including Messines, Broodseinde, and Passchendaele, where it suffered heavy casualties in the terrible mud and rain of Belgium. In 1918, its men helped resist the German Spring Offensive and took part in the Allied advance that aided in bringing the war to an end.

Disbanded in April 1919, the 38th Battalion's legacy remains an important part of Bendigo's military history.
