We walk alongside people on their journey to homefulnessโ€”a word we use to describe the fe

eling of safety, control and confidence that comes with having a place to call home. When people walk through our doors we help fulfil their immediate needs, like a shower, a meal, and a charged phone, while our 20+ visiting services provide support ranging from medical check-ups to financial counselling. And with a focus on the future, we connect people with housing, education and employment opportunities to build the skills and confidence to change their circumstances for good.

Winter has arrived hard and fast this year, with two Code Blue days already called as a result of extreme weather conditions. โ›ˆ๏ธ

There are health risks for people sleeping in the rain, wind, and cold - but one that might be unexpected is the increased risk of asthma attacks.

Nigel from Asthma Australia recently visited Hutt St Centre to share how people at risk of or experiencing homelessness can safely manage asthma this winter.

Asthma can affect anyone at any age, and cold weather and pollen are a trigger for asthma. This makes asthma attacks a real danger for people who have no choice but to sleep outdoors.

Thank you Nigel, for raising awareness about asthma, and for equipping people doing it tough with the information they need to look after their respiratory health this winter. ๐Ÿงก

Many of Hutt St Centre's Aged City Living (ACL) Lifestyles participants are avid football fans, proudly wearing their club colours and competing in a friendly AFL tipping contest each season. ๐Ÿ†๐Ÿˆ

You can imagine just how excited they were to be invited to Port Adelaide Football Club for a special experience. Players led a tour for the group, giving a behind the scenes look at the club's facilities and then cooking up a delicious barbecue lunch. ๐ŸŒญ

A few weeks later, we had the privilege of welcoming the players into Hutt St Centre for a cooking class experience. Cooking classes are a regular activity for the ACL Lifestyles group to build confidence and independence in the kitchen, and it was a blast having Port join them to create a delicious, hearty vegetable soup. ๐Ÿฒ

To top it off, two passionate Port fans collected plenty of signatures from the players and were smiling from ear-to-ear.

Thank you so much to the Port Adelaide Football Club for making our ACL Lifestyles group feel a part of the team, and for your passion to help end homelessness in South Australia. We know they'll be cheering for you all season! ๐Ÿโšก

Hutt St Centre is grateful to have been the charity partner for the Lions Australia Convention held just recently in Adelaide.

Lions clubs are committed to giving back to the community, and clubs across South Australia have kindly supported Hutt St Centre by helping serve meals in the kitchen and through many other valuable contributions.

Our CEO, Chris Burns, shared an update about the increase in people experiencing homelessness in South Australia, and how more people than ever before are seeking help to find a safe place to call home.

The Lions had been hard at work knitting and collecting an amazing donation of handmade beanies - donating more than 1,700 beanies!

Thank you so much to everyone who donated beanies to help people doing it tough stay warm and feel cared for this winter. ๐Ÿงก

Approximately 28% of the people who walk through our doors identify as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander, and reconciliation is critical to Hutt St Centre as we work on the land of the Kaurna people.

In recognition of National Reconciliation Week (27 May to 3 June) and National Sorry Day (26 May), we invited Cliffy Wilson from Kuma Kaaru to conduct a Smoking Ceremony. Cliffy explained the cleansing purposes of the ceremony, and invited our visitors, staff, and volunteers to take part.

It was a meaningful learning opportunity for our Hutt St Centre community, one visitor shared:

"We are on Aboriginal land here, and it's important to take part in events like this to learn and show respect."

A bush tucker inspired lunch of kangaroo and damper was a fitting meal for the occasion.

Cliffy has worked closely with Hutt St Centre over the years, and we are grateful to him for sharing his cultural knowledge.

Our volunteers are the heart and soul of Hutt St Centre, and have played an integral role in keeping our doors open since 1954 to care for people experiencing homelessness in South Australia.

You can always spot them by their bright orange shirts and friendly smiles ๐Ÿ˜Š, whether they're helping out in the dining room, laundry, offering pastoral care, or delivering educational talks at schools and community groups.

They received a well-deserved thanks at our Volunteer Recognition event, where awards were given based on the values of Hutt St Centre and our founders, the Daughters of Charity.

As well as enjoying a thank you brunch the following day, with Premier Peter Malinauskas dropping in to pass on his thanks.

In 2025, our volunteers worked an incredible 14,505 hours! ๐Ÿ‘ Thank you so much to all of our volunteer team at Hutt St Centre, you are amazing. ๐Ÿงก

Happy National Volunteer Week! ๐Ÿฅณ With over 300 volunteers at Hutt St Centre, this is a must-celebrate week in our calendar. ๐Ÿ“†๐Ÿงก

Introducing Sue. She has been volunteering with us for the last 18 months, preparing and serving meals to people at risk of or experiencing homelessness. ๐Ÿฝ๏ธ

"It's taken a while, but I have gotten to know people a bit better in conversations while serving meals. I've learnt who only eats vegetables, who is likely to want more tomato sauce, and which people like extra custard with dessert." ๐Ÿฎ

Having known about Hutt St Centre for a long time, one day she decided to explore the option of volunteering, and has found it an eye-opening experience.

"Before I started, I thought Hutt St Centre just fed people. I'm amazed at the breadth of services provided here. And also learning that homelessness is more than living in a park, there's also boarding houses and couch-surfing for example."

This year's National Volunteer Week theme is: Your Year to Volunteer. Sue's advice to anyone thinking of volunteering is simple.

"Give it a go. I think most volunteers feel like we get more than we give from the sense of doing something worthwhile in the community."

From all of us at Hutt St Centre, thank you Sue and to our 300+ volunteers for generously giving your time, skills, and passion to helping people facing homelessness. ๐Ÿ™Œ
