PREVAIL started with a garage sale. In 1976 our founders raised $275 and used it to open a door that hadn't existed in this county before. We've been thinking about that number all year, because it's still an amount a real person can actually give. What $275 bought in 1976 was a beginning. What $275 does now is more specific: crisis line hours, court accompaniment, and the practical things a family needs in the first week after leaving. Same number, fifty years apart.

In 1976, eight courageous women in Stockton held a neighborhood garage sale, raised $275, and made a fearless decision: to build a lifeline for survivors when almost no safety net existed. Fifty years later, that bold grassroots effort has grown into PREVAIL!

Our name has evolved twice over five decades—from the Women's Center to Women's Center-YFS, and now PREVAIL—because as our community's needs grew, the promise those founding women made only got bigger. They laid the groundwork for California's domestic violence movement, and we are proud to carry their legacy forward every single day.
