Cherokee Ranch & Castle Foundation is a non-profit organization that is committed to preserving the natural environment, enhancing cultural life in Colorado, and providing educational opportunities devoted to western heritage, wildlife and the arts. Cherokee Ranch & Castle includes land that originally belonged to two separate homesteads in the late 1890s: the Flower Homestead and the Blunt Homest

ead. The Johnson Family moved from the East and purchased the Flower Homestead in 1924 and built the 1450s Scottish-style Castle. Tweet purchased adjacent land that had been the Blunt Homestead and renamed both pieces of land Cherokee Ranch, which today includes 3,100 acres of natural beauty and wildlife. In 1996, Tweet worked with Douglas County to protect Cherokee Ranch through a Conservation Easement. The Foundation holds the deed to Cherokee Ranch which serves as a Cultural and Educational Hub. Cherokee Ranch & Castle provides a wide variety of programs including: Educational Castle Tours and Afternoon Teas, and a wide variety of K-12 and Adult Educational Programs focusing on, for example, Culture and the Arts, Environmental Science, Colorado and Western History and Heritage, Wildlife, Ranching, etc. We are open to the public by reservations or appointment only.

Meet some of the wonderful people who help make Cherokee Ranch & Castle so special!

These smiling faces are just a few of our amazing volunteers who were here for our recent Murder Mystery Show!

Our volunteers do so much to create a memorable experience for our guests. They share the history and beauty of the Castle through our tours, welcome visitors with warm smiles, and help ensure that everyone attending our events feels cared for and has a wonderful time.

Whether they’re leading a Castle tour, helping behind the scenes, or making sure our guests have everything they need, their dedication and enthusiasm shine through.

We are so grateful for each and every one of our volunteers. Thank you for sharing your time, your knowledge, and your love of Cherokee Ranch & Castle with our guests! ❤️

Yesterday was a very special day at Cherokee Ranch & Castle.

Rocky Mountain Wildlife Alliance released a rehabilitated red-tailed hawk back into the wild at Cherokee. Watching this beautiful bird take flight was a powerful and meaningful experience, and it was a privilege for our team to be there and be part of the moment.

As we watched, we couldn’t help but think of Tweet Kimball and her deep love for the wildlife of Cherokee.

The first photo is of Tweet with a golden eagle at Cherokee many years ago, followed by moments from yesterday’s red-tailed hawk release. Together, these photos connect two moments separated by decades.

Tweet cared deeply about protecting the wildlife and natural beauty of this land. And decades later, we are still witnessing that passion carried forward.

We are still releasing birds at Cherokee Ranch, just as Tweet would have wanted.

Her legacy lives on in the land she loved, the wildlife she cherished, and the work that continues here today.

The Great Hall has a beautiful new finish on its wood floor! 🏰

This past week, we had the floor in the great hall refinished by Kendall’s Custom Wood Floors, and we’re thrilled with how it turned out. The new finish brings out the warmth, character, and natural beauty of the wood.

This past weekend, we had the pleasure of welcoming Rob and Carol Breeze to Cherokee Ranch for a private land tour. They purchased this special experience at the Waterloo Gala this past summer, and we are truly grateful for their generous support of Cherokee Ranch.

It was a beautiful, cool Colorado morning to explore the land, enjoy the scenery, and share some of the history and stories that make Cherokee Ranch so special.

Our Santa Gertrudis cattle are an important part of life here at Cherokee Ranch. Known for their strength, adaptability, and distinctive red coloring, they’re well suited to the Colorado landscape.

Fire mitigation has been one of our top priorities this year at Cherokee Ranch & Castle.

We’re very thankful to Douglas County Emergency Services for helping us with the important work of clearing scrub oak and removing excess vegetation around the Ranch. Their crews have been working hard cutting and clearing, and putting the limbs through the chipper as they go.

This work helps reduce fire risk and is an important part of taking care of the Ranch and the surrounding area.

We truly appreciate Douglas County Emergency Services for their time, hard work, and support. Thank you for helping us care for this beautiful and special place.

Meet two of the wonderful volunteers who help make every event at the castle so special, Mimi Simmons and Doc Abbott!

Mimi and Doc were stationed at the front door, ready to welcome guests as they arrived and help set the tone for a wonderful visit. Their friendly smiles and warm greetings are just one of the many ways our amazing volunteers help bring the castle to life.

A Living Legacy at Cherokee Ranch & Castle

A few of our beautiful Santa Gertrudis cattle pause in the corral at Ranch Headquarters while Rafael Miranda, our Ranch & Land Manager, shares a glimpse into life on the ranch.

Caring for the cattle is at the heart of Rafael’s work. From the day-to-day needs of the herd to caring for the land they depend on, his work reflects the spirit of stewardship that has always been part of Cherokee Ranch.

It also carries forward the vision of Mildred “Tweet” Kimball, who brought Santa Gertrudis cattle to Colorado in 1954 and believed they could thrive here, even when others were skeptical. Her determination, love of the land, and commitment to the future of the ranch helped create the remarkable legacy we continue today.

Through Rafael’s dedication, Tweet’s vision remains a living part of Cherokee Ranch, not just something we remember, but something we continue to care for, nurture, and share with others.

And when Rafael welcomes guests to Ranch Headquarters, he gets to share more than a tour. He shares a story that is still being written. 🐂❤️
