On Saturday, June 13, 2026, at approximately 10:30pm, a Roanoke police officer initiated a traffic stop at the intersection of Hwy 22 west and north Main Street. The officer made contact with the driver, identified as 48 year old Joshua Huddleston. During the traffic stop, the officer had probable cause to ask Huddleston to get out of the vehicle. Once out of the vehicle, Huddleston began displaying erratic behavior. The officer conducted a pat down search and located a handgun. After retrieving the gun, Huddleston pushed away from the officer and pulled out second handgun and fired several shots at the officer while fleeing. The officer returned fire. Huddleston was later located inside an abandoned house near the scene with a gunshot wound in his torso. He was airlifted to Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta. There were no officers or citizens injured. Due to this being an officer involved shooting, the incident was turned over to the Alabama State Bureau of Investigations. Surrounding agencies who assisted in the search were Randolph and Chambers County Sheriff's Offices, Wedowee, Wadley, Lanett, Oxford, Newnan and Lagrange Police Departments.
