WILLIAM H. KEY SR.., age 83, of Fairmount, passed away peacefully Sat., Oct. 24, 2026, surrounded by his loved ones at his daughter’s home in Cayuga, Ind.
He was born Nov. 9, 1942, in Louisville, Ky. to Hillrey and Jewell Wood Key. He married Diana Tiffin July 23, 1961. She preceded him in death after more than 40 years of marriage on March 22, 2004.
William and Diana shared a life filled with love, laughter, family, and countless memories. Together they raised two children, Teresa (Don) Buchhaas and William H. (Melanie) Key Jr.
William’s greatest joy was his family. He is survived by his 10 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. They will forever carry his memory and the lessons he taught them. . William is also survived by his brother, Melvin (Beth) Key; sister, Kathie (Joe) Pittman; extended family, and many friends. William was preceded in death by his grandchildren, Andre Corbin and Stephanie Key; his parents, Hillrey “Shorty” Key and Jewell Key Mizell; his stepfather, Joseph Mizell; his sisters, Barbara Easter and Brenda Hollinger; sisters-in-law, Jill Key and Karen Alexander; brother, Charlie Key; brothers-in-law, Charles Tiffin, Darrell Tiffin and Fred Alexander; and nephew, Shawn Hollinger.
After Diana passed away, William spent much of his time with his brother-in-law, Charlie Tiffin. The two became inseparable– truly two peas in a pod. Their bond was a special one and Charlie’s companionship brought William comfort and happiness during those years.
Some knew him as Wild Bill, some as Hoot N Nanny, some as Paka, and to others he was simply Sugar. Whatever name you called him, William was someone you were unlikely to forget.
In his younger years, William enjoyed playing softball, muzzleloader shooting, fishing, hunting, camping, horseshoes, bowling, and line dancing with friends. He loved being outdoors and staying busy, and he never seemed to run out of things to do or stories to tell.
After retiring from General Motors, William continued working alongside his brother, Charlie, as a handyman in Rantoul. He was also very proud of the large garden he tended, putting in countless hours caring for it and enjoying the fruits of his labor.
William proudly served his country in the United States Army. While stationed in Washington, D.C., near the end of the Vietnam War, he earned his GED and was given the honor of serving as a guard over the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. His military service was an important part of his life, and he carried that pride with him always.
William will be remembered for his hard work, his stories, his sense of humor, his love of the outdoors, and most of all, the love he had for his family. His presence brought laughter and memories that will be treasured for generations.
Though he is no longer here to tell another story, make another joke, work in his garden, or answer to one of the many names his family gave him, his legacy lives on in everyone who loved him.
Rest easy, Wild Bill, Hoot N Nanny, Paka, and Sugar. You will be deeply missed and forever loved.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. on Fri., Oct. 30 at Robison Chapel, Catlin, with Pastor Chuck Powell officiating. Burial will be in the Davis Cemetery west of Fairmount with military honors accorded. Masonic Rites at 4:30 p.m., Oct. 29 by the Catlin Masonic Lodge with visitation to follow from 5-7 p.m. at the Robison Chapel. Memorials to the C.A.R.A. Animal Shelter.
