We invite you to see the Museum Library’s 9th annual exhibit Penn in the Field: Student Fieldwork Photography, on display on all three of the library’s levels until August 2027. Every year, the exhibit showcases fieldwork and research travel of current undergraduate and graduate students as documented through their own lenses.

We extend congratulations and sincere thanks to student photographers from the departments of Anthropology, Art and Archaeology of the Mediterranean World, Classical Studies, Earth & Environmental Sciences, East Asian Languages and Civilizations, the Graduate School of Education, History, History of Art, and Urban Studies.

During voting on September 2, students, faculty, Penn Museum staff, and visitors had an opportunity to cast votes for their favorites. The winning photographs earn pride of place by the Museum Library’s entrance and a reward from Penn Museum Academic Engagement. Congratulations to Arielle Hardy, Sooah Kwak, and Emily Fowler for their top-place entries!

We are also grateful to the staff of the Vitale Digital Media Center for printing the photographs under David Toccafondi’s direction, Penn Museum Academic Engagement’s Anne Tiballi and Sarah Linn, and the officers of the Penn Museum Graduate Advisory Council for their help with promoting and organizing a wonderful NSO mixer where the photographs were featured. We appreciate the help and support of our wonderful academic departmental coordinators, faculty members, and staff for encouraging student participation, too!

A very special thank you to Museum Library staff member Ainsley Hume, who went above and beyond for this year’s exhibit! Ainsley set up the submission process, created labels for each photo, organized the voting, and painstakingly installed the photographs in the Museum Library. Our thanks to Jason de Medeiros for assisting Ainsley with the installation, too.

The plan is to have all of our new photos up by mid to late October, so keep a lookout for our announcement later in the Fall.

The people of Valencia celebrate the Festival of Corpus Christi through La Danza de la Moma. The main figure in the dance represents Virtue (La Moma) and the rest of the dancers represent the sins of humanity. Throughout the dance, La Moma strikes down each sin, achieving victory over them all.

Thank you to Marisa Kelath for this beautiful photo, submitted to our annual Penn in the Field photography contest. All Penn students are asked to submit photographs from their fieldwork, which are then displayed in the Penn Museum Library throughout the academic year.
