Thank you to everyone who joined us at Kingston Free Library for Saturday’s special viewing of the Declaration of Independence!

We were thrilled to welcome nearly 300 visitors — 277 by clicker count! — for this rare opportunity to see the Rhode Island State Archives’ 1777 Goddard printing of the Declaration. It was wonderful to see such a great mix of ages come through Potter Hall to connect with this important piece of history.

This event would not have been possible without the RI Department of State’s Office and the Rhode Island State Archives. Special thanks to Lauren Fogarty, Program Coordinator for the RI250 Commission; Ashley Selima, Director of State Archives & Public Records Administration; and Kate Telford, Senior Digital Archivist, for helping make this event such a meaningful experience for our community.

We are also grateful to the Rhode Island State Police and our own South Kingstown Police Department for their assistance, and to the South Kingstown 250th Committee for helping mark the occasion — including painting the SK 250th logo on the street in front of Kingston Free Library.

Thank you again to everyone who attended, asked questions, brought family members, and helped make this special event such a success. We loved seeing our community come together to experience Rhode Island’s revolutionary history up close.

Did you know a woman’s name appears on one of the most important early printings of the Declaration of Independence?

Mary Katherine Goddard printed an official copy of the Declaration in Baltimore in 1777. This printing was especially important because it included the names of the signers — helping preserve the Declaration as a public and archival record.
And yes, you can see one of these historic Goddard printings right here at Kingston Free Library.

The Rhode Island State Archives will display their copy for two hours only:
📅 Saturday, June 20
