We are an all-volunteer fire company out of Baltimore County, Maryland. We operate 24/7/365. We are a non-profit volunteer fire and ems organization.

Our apparatus includes a Rescue Engine, an Engine-Tanker, a Tanker Support Unit, a Medic, a Medical Support Unit, and a Special Operations Response Team vehicle.

The Chestnut Ridge Volunteer Fire Company in Owings Mills hosted its first-ever Firefighter for a Day event yesterday, giving community members an insider look at what it takes to be a first responder.

The day started with a quick lesson in gear prep—where participants discovered that turnout gear, air tanks, and tools can add over 100 extra pounds! To get moving, everyone competed in a lighthearted timed challenge to see who could suit up the fastest. From there, the groups rotated through four stations designed to provide a hands-on introduction to essential firefighter skills.

Participants got a practical feel for the work by climbing a ladder to a second-story window, practicing a safe window exit, and handling a pressurized hose to put out a target fire. They even got to experience search-and-rescue basics, covering their eyes to navigate a dark room and find a dummy victim. Teams even had some fun playing Jenga with hydraulic rescue tools and playing tug-o-war with rescue ropes!

Now that they have a taste of being a first responder, several participants are planning to take the next step toward applying as volunteer members and starting formal training.

Each year, Halloween is celebrated with trick-or-treating, parties, candy and (sometimes) drinking. To stay safe, follow these 13 ghoulishly good tips from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration for drivers, pedestrians, partygoers and party hosts:

Drivers
🌛Be alert for trick-or-treaters and other pedestrians
🌛Slow down and scan the road—remember: slower speeds save lives
🌛Expect the unexpected: Watch for young trick-or-treaters in unexpected places and/or unaware of traffic and dart into the street
🌛If you see a drunk driver, contact law enforcement

Trick-or-Treaters
🎃Create a “buddy system” to get each other home safely and prevent walking alone
🎃Follow the rules of the road and obey signs and signals
🎃If possible, cross streets at crosswalks or intersections and look for cars in all directions, including those turning left or right

Halloween Party-goers & Hosts
🙀Before drinking, choose a designated driver, or schedule a ridesharing, ride-hailing or taxi service
🙀If you drink, do not drive for any reason; even a small amount of alcohol can affect your ability to drive
🙀Hosts:
• Be responsible and take action to make sure guests get home safely.
• Collect car keys from guests who are drinking.
• Provide non-alcoholic beverage options
