This week, our rookies are training in HAZMAT operations so they can rapidly identify, contain, and neutralize dangerous substances. A vital part of this training is technical decontamination, the step-by-step cleaning process pictured here that prevents hazardous chemicals from spreading beyond the scene. Bottom right is OFD recruit, Christian McCary.

Recently, crews paid a visit to our industrial partner, Pharmavite, for a walk-through of their facility in the Northeast Industrial Park. We’re touring every industry in the park as part of our annual pre-fire planning, which helps our newer firefighters learn the layout, the work being done inside, and the hazards we could face if we’re ever called to respond. Thanks to the Pharmavite team for their hospitality and for helping us prepare. Knowing our community’s industries before an emergency makes us safer, faster, and better prepared to protect the people who work there.

Stop using your device right away if the battery smells strange, is
warm to the touch, makes popping noises, changes in shape or
color, or if you see smoke. If it is safe, move the device away
from anything that can catch fire. A damaged battery can
overheat and start a fire. For more info: fpw.org.
