Active Learning in Action | A Spotlight on DOSA

At Envision Education, learning is hands-on, inquiry-driven, and connected to the real world!

Today, we’re zooming into a high school science classroom at Downtown Oakland Science Academy (DOSA), where students explored natural selection and bird beak adaptations.

Using everyday tools to simulate different beak shapes, students investigated how birds’ physical characteristics affect their ability to gather food. From tweezer-like beaks that pick up small objects to spoon-shaped beaks that scoop up more, students discovered how adaptations help birds survive.

💡 This is The Envision Way: Students don’t just learn about science. They ask questions, investigate, and think like scientists.

𝐄𝐧𝐯𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐄𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐬 𝐁𝐮𝐢𝐥𝐝 𝐋𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩 𝐢𝐧 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐣𝐞𝐜𝐭-𝐁𝐚𝐬𝐞𝐝 𝐋𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠

This week, Envision Education educators came together at the Project Based Learning (PBL) Leadership Academy Fall Institute to strengthen their knowledge and leadership in PBL. Will Brown, Director of STEM Instruction, joined Caleb Brown and Pedro Fequiere from City Arts and Leadership Academy (CAL), and Sam O'Brien and Finn Butler from Downtown Oakland Science Academy (DOSA), for two days of learning, collaboration, and planning.

A highlight of the experience was touring High Tech High Middle Grades, where student guides shared past projects, reflected on how PBL supports their learning, and offered firsthand perspectives on their experiences. Workshops and systems-thinking activities further equipped our team to advance meaningful, student-centered PBL across our schools.

Together, the team developed a leadership project plan centered on spring exhibitions at CAL and DOSA, where students will share their project-based learning and showcase their work with authentic audiences. Both school teams will continue developing their plans to bring these exhibitions to life and strengthen the systems that support high-quality PBL.

We're excited to bring this learning back to our schools and create more opportunities for students to share their thinking, celebrate their work, and demonstrate what they can do.

We're wrapping up our school-by-school celebration of progress across Envision Schools with a spotlight on Downtown Oakland Science Academy (DOSA) in Oakland!

Here are three achievements worth celebrating from the 2026 California School Dashboard:

📚 Mathematics: Student performance improved by 9.4 points, reflecting meaningful academic growth.

🎓 College & Career Readiness: Increased by 11.7 percentage points, reaching 89.7% and demonstrating progress in preparing students for opportunities beyond high school.

📈 Graduation Success: DOSA achieved a 94.9% graduation rate, an increase of 8.9 percentage points and exceeding California's statewide average of 88.1%.

As we conclude our school spotlight series, we celebrate the collective achievements of all three Envision schools and the students, educators, and families who make this progress possible. Together, we're continuing to expand opportunities and strengthen student outcomes across our communities.

Here are three achievements worth celebrating from the 2026 California School Dashboard:

🎓 College & Career Readiness: Increased by 8.5 percentage points, reaching 88.4% and reflecting meaningful growth in preparing students for life beyond high school.

📈 Graduation Success: CALA achieved a 96.5% graduation rate, exceeding California's statewide average of 88.1%.

📉 Reduction in Suspensions: Suspension rates decreased by 3.2 percentage points, marking progress toward a more supportive learning environment.

Here are three achievements worth celebrating:
📚 English Language Arts: ELA performance improved by 17.9 points, reflecting meaningful academic growth.
🔬 Science: Students achieved a score of 54.8 points, exceeding California's statewide level of 54.2.
📉 Reduction in Suspensions: Suspension rates decreased by 3.8 percentage points, marking progress toward a more supportive learning environment.

Celebrating Progress Across Envision Schools!
The 2026 California School Dashboard results highlight meaningful achievements across our schools in Oakland, Hayward, and San Francisco!

📈 Graduation Success: All three Envision schools exceeded California's statewide graduation rate of 88.1%, with school graduation rates ranging from 94.9% to 96.5%.

🎓 College & Career Readiness: Downtown Oakland Science Academy (DOSA) and City Arts & Leadership Academy (CALA) demonstrated growth in college and career readiness, increasing by 11.7 and 8.5 percentage points, respectively.

📚 College Preparation: All three schools reported 100% A–G course completion among graduates, reflecting our commitment to preparing students for opportunities beyond high school.

These results reflect the dedication of our students, educators, and school communities as we continue working to expand opportunities and strengthen student outcomes.
