Today, May 28th, is World Hunger Day. As we reflect on how we can make a difference here in our community, we first have to recognize that there is a need.

A recent article from the Indiana Youth Institute’s 2026 Indiana Kids Count Data Book shared that food insecurity in Elkhart County climbed from 10.6% to 16.9%. Hunger continues to rise locally across Elkhart, St. Joseph, and Marshall counties.
Here at FCDC, we have joined the Elkhart Community Food Collaborative, Hunger Ends Here. We are partnering with many local non-profits with one shared goal in mind: ensuring no one in our community goes hungry.

One of the greatest benefits of working together is the ability to stretch resources further. Every $1 donated allows us to purchase $6 worth of food, helping us feed even more families in our community.

A huge thank you to Feed the Children for supporting local food pantries, schools, churches and community services that provide food and personal hygiene products free to those in need.

Memorial Day, a day we pause to honor and remember the brave men and women who gave their lives for our freedom. With gratitude for their sacrifice, courage and service to our country, may we never forget those who paid the ultimate price. 🇺🇸

Last weekend, the Wakarusa Cub Scouts came with their annual community food drive donation and filled 8–10 shopping carts with food! 🛒🥫

We are so grateful for their continued support and generosity year after year. Thank you, Wakarusa Cubs, for making such a big impact!

Thanks to and their Seed to Feed program, we were able to pick up our produce plants and seeds last week, and we kicked off Monday with planting day! 🪏👩🏻‍🌾🧑🏻‍🌾

A huge thank you to the local homeschool families who came out to help plant and to Carl for sharing his expertise with us. We are so excited to watch this garden grow and share with our community in the months ahead! 🌱🍅

Seven years ago, the Family Christian Development Center installed 400 solar panels on our building through a lease program. These panels have been an incredible blessing, not only for FCDC, but also for helping reduce electric costs for the City of Nappanee’s Elder Haus building and Main Street Manor.

Because of the savings generated by these panels, we’ve been able to direct more resources back into serving our community through our food pantry, clothing closet, medical programs, and outreach efforts.

Now, we have an exciting opportunity: to purchase the solar panels outright instead of continuing to lease them.

Our goal is to raise the needed funds by June 30. Owning these panels would be a long-term investment in the future of FCDC and the families and individuals we serve every day.

We are so thankful for Mr. Cannaday, the Industrial Technology teacher at NorthWood High School, who came to FCDC with some of the boys from his class to help us tackle several projects around our building.
These young men worked hard and were such a blessing to us as they helped get many important to-do items checked off our list. We are incredibly grateful for their kindness, willingness to serve and all of the HARD work they put in throughout the week.
