Giving Back to One of Our Own!

Some of our junior firefighters and department members spent time helping stack firewood for one of our lifetime members.

It's not always about responding to emergencies. Sometimes it's just about lending a helping hand and taking care of our own.

We're proud of our members for stepping up and learning what being part of the fire department family is all about. It's more than just firefighting!

Once family, always family!

Proud of Our Color Guard!

Monday night, our Oak Hill Fire & Rescue Color Guard proudly presented the colors at our Board of Directors meeting.

Having our own Color Guard is something we are especially proud of. Not every fire department has this opportunity, and we are honored to have this special division within OHFR.

These members take pride in representing our department, our community, and the traditions of the fire service.

Thank you to our Color Guard for your dedication and for representing Oak Hill Fire & Rescue with such honor and respect!

FLOODED ROADWAYS – USE CAUTION!

Heavy rain overnight has caused flooding in several areas. Creeks and rivers are overflowing onto roadways.

Please use extra caution if you must travel today!

Watch for standing or moving water on roads, especially near creeks, rivers, and low-lying areas.

Never attempt to drive through flooded roadways! You cannot tell how deep the water is or if the road underneath has been washed away.

TURN AROUND, DON'T DROWN!

Please slow down, stay alert, and avoid flooded areas. Stay safe, everyone!

How can you tell if it is a smoke alarm or carbon monoxide alarm? The Beeps may sound similar... But... they are slightly different. Take a listen.

Alarms can save lives. Change your batteries!!

Two years ago, Hurricane Helene changed Western North Carolina forever.

Those of us at Oak Hill Fire & Rescue will never forget the days that followed. We remember the darkness, the downed trees, damaged roads, no power, limited communication, and not always knowing what we were going to face next.

But we also remember something else just as strongly — people helping people.

We watched our community come together in an incredible way. Neighbors checked on neighbors. Volunteers showed up ready to work. Churches, businesses, organizations, fire departments, and complete strangers stepped in wherever they could.

And then the donations started coming.

We are still incredibly grateful for every case of water, every box of food, every supply, every piece of equipment, and every dollar that was given to help the people of Western North Carolina.

Those donations didn’t just help us take care of our own community. They gave us the ability to help others too.

When someone gives during a disaster, they may never see exactly where that donation ends up or whose life it touches. But we saw it. We saw those supplies go into the hands of people who needed them. We saw communities helping communities. We saw kindness during some of the hardest days our area has faced.

Helene taught us a lot about preparedness, communication, and how quickly normal life can change. But more than anything, it reminded us how strong Western North Carolina is when we stand together.

Today, two years later, we remember those who lost homes, property, businesses, and loved ones. We remember those who are still rebuilding. And we remember every firefighter, first responder, volunteer, lineman, road crew, organization, business, and citizen who stepped up to help.

To everyone who supported Oak Hill Fire & Rescue and the people of Western North Carolina during Hurricane Helene — thank you.

We truly could not have done what we did without you.

Two years later, we remember. We are grateful. And we are still WNC strong.
