OHFR Summer Camp – Day 4

Day 4 of Oak Hill Fire & Rescue Summer Camp was another busy day full of learning, teamwork, and fun!

We started the day with wildland training as campers learned how to prepare wildland fire lines, giving them hands-on experience with an important part of wildland firefighting.

North Carolina Wildlife also brought their boat and gave campers the opportunity to learn more about water safety and the role they play in emergency response.

Campers had fun racing on the rock wall, played a great game of Pictionary, and ran through a firefighter safety and survival maze while fully geared up, including an SCBA prop and pack.

A big thank you to Applebee's Grill + Bar for providing lunch for our campers today!

Thank you to NC Wildlife, Applebee’s, and everyone who helped make Day 4 possible. We are thankful for another great day of summer camp!

OHFR Summer Camp – Day 3

Day 3 of Oak Hill Fire & Rescue Summer Camp was packed with hands-on training and new experiences!

Campers learned about forcible entry working as a team using a set of irons — a Halligan bar and axe — to pry open a door, with supplies sponsored by Wall Lumber Company. They also practiced knots, learned CPR skills using manikins provided by EMS, and worked on raising and lowering ladders.

Campers worked with a Stokes basket, learning how to properly strap in a patient and safely carry them out. They also had the opportunity to climb the rock wall, which helped simulate rescue situations like those firefighters may face in the gorge, ravines, and other difficult terrain.

Another highlight of the day was using the fire truck driving simulator from the WPCC Regional Fire & Rescue Training Center, giving campers a chance to experience what it is like to operate emergency vehicles in a controlled training environment.

OHFR Summer Camp – Day 2

Day 2 of Oak Hill Fire & Rescue Summer Camp was another great day of hands-on learning and fun!

Campers spent the morning learning about vehicle extrication and had the opportunity to use cutters, spreaders, and other rescue tools on cars provided by Smokey's Wrecker Service. This gave them a better understanding of the equipment firefighters use during rescue situations.

They also participated in a fire extinguisher class using real fire extinguishers, giving them valuable experience and confidence in learning how to safely operate one.

A big thank you to Chick-fil-A for providing lunch for our campers today!

We ended the day with a fun game of dodgeball, giving everyone a chance to relax, laugh, and enjoy some friendly competition.

OHFR Summer Camp – Day 1

Day 1 of Oak Hill Fire & Rescue Summer Camp was a great start!

A huge thank you to Zion Baptist Church for allowing us to use their vans today. Because of their support, we were able to take our campers on several great tours and experiences.

Today, our campers had the opportunity to tour Fire-Dex in Old Fort and visit EMS Base 1. We then stopped by Catawba Meadows Park for lunch, which was provided with the support of The Pie Hole.

After lunch, campers toured the Communications Center, where they learned more about the important role dispatchers play in emergency response.

To end the day, campers were able to put on turnout gear and take part in a few gear races. It was a fun way to learn just how heavy and important firefighter gear really is!

We are thankful for everyone who helped make Day 1 possible, and we are excited for the rest of the week!

Oak Hill Fire & Rescue is hosting a Passenger Vehicle Rescue series through WPCC Regional Fire & Rescue Training.

We’re always training and working to sharpen our skills so we can better serve our community when the call comes in.

Engine 2, Engine 3, Rescue 1, & Medical 1 responded to a motor vehicle accident near the 5800 block of NC 181 - mm 16 at 1:58 pm May 26. Three vehicles were involved with a confirmed entrapment. Both patients were transported to UNC - Blueridge with non- life threatening injuries.

OHFR training night!

Members spent the evening working on technical rescue rope systems and pulley setups, practicing mechanical advantage and controlled rope operations. Crews also ran firefighter hose drills and reviewed SCBA skills to reinforce safe and efficient fireground operations.

Training like this helps keep our members prepared, confident, and ready to respond when our community needs us.
