September 11, 2001. Twenty-five years later, we remember. ๐บ๐ธ
On the morning of September 11, 2001, 19 terrorists associated with al-Qaeda hijacked four commercial airplanes in a coordinated terrorist attack against the United States.
8:46 a.m.
American Airlines Flight 11 was deliberately flown into the North Tower of the World Trade Center in New York City.
9:03 a.m.
United Airlines Flight 175 struck the South Tower of the World Trade Center.
9:37 a.m.
American Airlines Flight 77 was flown into the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia, the headquarters of the United States Department of Defense.
9:59 a.m.
The South Tower collapsed after sustaining catastrophic damage from the attack and the resulting fires.
10:03 a.m.
Passengers and crew aboard United Airlines Flight 93, having learned about the other attacks, fought back against the hijackers. The plane crashed into a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania, preventing the terrorists from reaching their intended target.
10:28 a.m.
The North Tower collapsed.
In less than two hours, the United States had suffered the deadliest terrorist attack in its history. 2,977 innocent people lost their lives, including people at the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and aboard Flight 93.
But September 11 is not only a story of destruction. It is also a story of courage. Firefighters, police officers, paramedics, military personnel, and ordinary citizens responded when their country and fellow Americans needed them most.
Today, we remember those who lost their lives. We honor those who ran toward danger to save others. And we remember the courage of the passengers and crew of Flight 93.
Twenty-five years later, their stories remain part of the American story.
Never Forget. ๐บ๐ธ
