As the weather warms up, many of our Head Start families are enjoying time around pools, lakes, and water play. Keeping children safe around water is so important!

👶💙 Simple Water Safety Tips for Families:

✔️ Always watch children closely when they are near water—stay within arm’s reach
✔️ Never leave a child unattended, even for a moment
✔️ Use properly fitted life jackets when around lakes or on boats

💚 Anaphylaxis Looks Different by Age 💚
Anaphylaxis is a severe allergic reaction that can happen very quickly. Knowing the signs—especially for your child’s age—can help you act fast.

👶 Infants (Birth–12 months)
Babies can’t tell us how they feel, so watch closely for sudden changes.
Signs may include:

Difficulty, fast, or noisy breathing
Swelling of the lips, eyes, face, or tongue
Hives or widespread redness on the skin
Repeated vomiting
Sudden, intense crying or crying that sounds different
Becoming unusually sleepy, limp, or hard to wake

👉 Trust your instincts—if your baby doesn’t seem “right,” it’s important to act.

🧒 Toddlers (1–3 years)
Toddlers may be able to show or say something is wrong, but symptoms can still spread quickly.
Signs may include:

Trouble breathing, coughing, wheezing, or choking sounds
Swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat
Hives, itching, or flushed skin
Vomiting, diarrhea, or stomach pain
Saying their throat hurts, mouth feels “funny,” or they feel bad
Suddenly acting scared, confused, very tired, or weak

🚨 What to Do for Any Age

Call 911 immediately if you think your child is having a severe allergic reaction
If your child has been prescribed epinephrine, use it right away
Do not wait—symptoms can worsen quickly

Common triggers can include foods, insect stings, medications, or latex. Reactions may look different every time.

💚 Talk to your child’s healthcare provider if you have concerns about allergies or reactions.

🌟 Recognizing Burnout & Feeling Overwhelmed

Parenting is a big job, and some days can feel heavier than others. It’s completely normal to feel tired or stretched thin — especially when you’re trying to juggle work, family, and everything in between. Here are a few gentle signs that you might be experiencing burnout:

💛 Signs You May Be Feeling Overwhelmed:

You feel tired even after resting
Small tasks feel harder than usual
You get frustrated more quickly
You find it hard to focus
You feel like you “don’t have anything left to give”

💛 What You Can Do:

Take a few minutes to breathe deeply
Step outside for fresh air
Ask a friend or family member for help
Give yourself permission to pause — you deserve it
Celebrate the small wins (they count!)

Remember: Taking care of yourself helps you take care of your child. You’re doing an amazing job, even on the days that feel tough. 💛

If you ever need resources, support, or someone to talk to, your Head Start family is always here for you. Also, here are some sources available to help right here in our local community:

📚🐛 Storytime Fun at Kennedy Head Start 2! 🐛📚

Our Kennedy Head Start 2 students had a wonderful time as their teacher, Ms. Tina Jordan, read The Very Hungry Caterpillar aloud for Week of the Young Child. The children were fully engaged, listening closely and enjoying every colorful page of this beloved story!

Reading together in early childhood plays a big role in building important skills. Storytime helps children grow their vocabulary, learn how stories work, and develop a love for books. These early literacy experiences support listening, understanding, and readiness for school—all while having fun!

We love seeing our classrooms filled with imagination, learning, and happy readers! 💚📖
