Even if you can't spell that well, the annual Lenoir County Education Foundation Adult Spelling Bee is a lot of F-U-N every year. It was real fun Tuesday night for the team from South Lenoir High School, which took the first-place prize in the Spelling Bee AND won the Spirit Award for their costumes and their exuberance. The team from Contentnea-Savannah K-8 finished second in the Spelling Bee and the team from LCPS Central Services took third place. Every year, the big winners are LCPS teachers, since proceeds from the Adult Spelling Bee help fund the Education Foundation's mini-grant awards.

It is a lesson that 500 fifth graders from Lenoir and Greene counties will remember for a long time -- a chance to hear, sing along with and learn from the North Carolina Symphony. LCPS is a proud host of the NC Symphony's Education Concert each year and Thursday's concert at the Kinston High Performing Arts Center, directed by conductor Joseph Peters, only reinforced the value of the Symphony's appearance. Students learned about the elements of music -- texture, tempo, melody, among them -- and put the melody lesson to use by singing "The Longleaf Pine," a state anthem they'd practiced with their school music teachers before Thursday's big day. Thanks to state Rep. Chris Humphrey, LCPS Superintendent Brent Williams and other district leaders for helping mark this special occasion.

In its second school-tour adventure of the year, Superintendent Brent Williams the LCPS senior staff had fun learning about the hard work and innovative practices going on at Northwest and Southeast elementary schools. Thanks to Northwest Principal Christy Eubanks for the data-filled presentation and the cool scavenger hunt she organized (and to teacher Leah Jones and other faculty members for letting the visitors into their classrooms to search out clues). At Southeast, Principal Chamekka Williams (with assists from school counselor Casey Godbold and digital learning specialist Arianne Good) shared the school's goals and its strategies for furthering academic progress, boosting attendance and incentivizing good behavior. It was, in brief, a very full morning.

Sixty of our high school students got a good look at what it takes to make ends meet on Wednesday as they participated in the Reality of Money exercise, a simulation conceived by the State Employees' Credit Union with help from NC Cooperative Extension in Lenoir County Lenoir County 4-H and LCPS. Assigned profiles that described their fictional wages, job status, level of education and other characteristics, the students met with volunteers to decide how to budget their monthly income. It soon became clear to the students that everything caries a cost, particularly the choices you make in life.

Congratulations to Lauren Artis, a first-grade teacher at Banks Elementary School, on her selection as LCPS Beginning Teacher of the Year for 2026-2027. Honored as the district's Teacher Assistant of the Year in 2024, Ms. Artis has since accomplished her dream of earning a bachelor's degree in elementary education and teaching in her own classroom. Along the way, she's confirmed the success of LCPS's program of growing its own teachers. Way to go, Ms. Artis!

It's a big time under the Big Top this week as LCPS celebrates National School Lunch Week and its theme "Cafeteria Circus." The School Nutrition Association, which leads the annual national observance, has framed “Cafeteria Circus” as a celebration of the jugglers, magicians, high-wire artists and the ringmasters who make school lunches such an integral, nutritious part of the school day. In volume alone, it is a feat deserving of the spotlight.
The School Nutrition staff at Lenoir County Public Schools serves nearly 10,000 lunches and breakfast meals each school day, provided without cost to the students. And, as you can see, they still find time to have fun.

We'd put this group of high-fliers up against any other anywhere. It's National Principals Month and LCPS has these 17 reasons to celebrate -- experienced educators who go the distance to ensure their teachers and their students succeed. It's work as tough as it is important, and those called to do it deserve our gratitude and respect. Thank you, LCPS principals.
