Celebrating National Wildlife Day 🐾

Today, September 4, we’re celebrating National Wildlife Day by recognizing the incredible animals who inspire us to protect, preserve, and care for wildlife every day.

At Busch Wildlife Sanctuary, our animal ambassadors play an important role in connecting people with wildlife. Through education, rehabilitation, conservation, and community outreach, we work to foster a deeper understanding of Florida’s native wildlife and inspire people to become better stewards of the natural world.

Every animal we care for has a story. Some are here because they were injured or orphaned and are on their way back to the wild. Others, unable to return to their natural habitat, have found a permanent home at the Sanctuary as ambassadors for their species.

Their stories remind us that protecting wildlife isn’t just about one day — it’s about the choices we make every day to coexist with and care for the world around us.

This National Wildlife Day, we invite you to celebrate the wildlife in your own backyard, learn more about the animals that call Florida home, and discover how you can help protect them for generations to come💚

On August 5, a juvenile Cooper’s hawk arrived at Busch Wildlife Sanctuary dehydrated, in poor body condition, and suffering from significant injuries. Imaging revealed a fractured clavicle, additional suspected skeletal trauma, and a large wound along the keel of its breastbone.

Our veterinary team performed a procedure to carefully clean the wound and remove damaged tissue, leaving part of the wound open to allow for proper drainage and healing. Thankfully, the hawk responded beautifully to treatment. Over the following weeks, its appetite, activity, weight, and flight ability steadily improved.

By August 21, the wound was fully closed and well healed, and the sutures were removed. The hawk then moved into our flight barn, where it had more space to build strength and prepare for life back in the wild.

And on August 25, this young hawk was officially released!

We are so grateful to everyone who helped make this successful return to the wild possible. A special thank you to the Mayor of Lake Clarke Shores for helping coordinate the release with members of the community💚

🦦🎨 Painting, sipping, snacking, and celebrating our amazing volunteers!

Recently, Busch Wildlife Sanctuary volunteers came together for a fun evening to mark the unofficial end of another long (and very hot!) Florida summer.

We were excited to partner with Spotlight Project, co-founded by Allison Ragle and Emma Pawlik, to bring this event to life. Spotlight Project is a South Florida-based event company that partners with local nonprofits to create fun, interactive experiences that bring people and communities together while supporting important causes — like wildlife rescue and environmental education!

And of course, the theme had to be inspired by none “otter” than Charlie, our North American river otter! 🦦 Allison led a guided painting session while volunteers and Sanctuary staff followed along and enjoyed an evening of creativity and connection.

Most importantly, this event was a small way for our Sanctuary team to say a BIG thank you to the incredible volunteers who continue to show up for us, shift after shift, even through the heat and grueling Florida summer.

We truly could not do what we do without the time, energy, and dedication of our volunteers❤️

We’re soo excited to team up with Busch Wildlife Sanctuary for a second year !!

For over 40 years, Busch Wildlife Sanctuary has been a dedicated non-profit committed to protecting Florida’s native wildlife and natural ecosystems. Their mission is twofold: rehabilitating injured, sick, or orphaned animals and providing environmental education to the public.

🤍 Our flash tattoo designs for the night will be inspired by these amazing native Florida animals and native Florida floras, along with some special earring options !

Partial proceeds from the evening will go directly to support Busch Wildlife Sanctuary.

Meet Patient 3779, a common gallinule who arrived at Busch Wildlife Sanctuary on July 25 after being found trapped in a storm drain in Palm Springs💔

Thankfully, this baby had no significant injuries but was still much too young to survive on its own in the wild. That meant weeks of around-the-clock supportive care from our wildlife rehabilitation team — feeding, monitoring, providing housing & care, and helping this little gallinule learn all the skills necessary to eventually thrive on its own in the wild.

One of those skills? Learning how to find food! 🪱

Because young animals normally learn by watching others of their own species, our team used an iPad to show Patient 3779 video of an adult gallinule foraging. And a few weeks later, this growing baby was doing it all on its own!

This is what wildlife rehabilitation is all about: Giving every animal that comes through our doors the time, specialized care, and opportunity it needs to return to its natural habitat💚

🐾 We’re looking for EVENT VOLUNTEERS!

Do you enjoy meeting people, being part of your community, and helping make an event a success? Busch Wildlife Sanctuary is looking for friendly, outgoing volunteers to lend a hand at fundraising, community awareness, and special events throughout the year.

Event volunteers may help with everything from setting up and tearing down, to greeting guests, staffing tables, assisting with event activities, and representing Busch Wildlife Sanctuary in the community.

The best part? Our needs vary by event, so you can help out when opportunities are available and work volunteering into your schedule.

We’re looking for volunteers who are 18+, comfortable being on their feet for extended periods, able to lend a hand with event setup when needed, and—most importantly—friendly and comfortable talking with people.
