The California Highway Patrol (CHP) is dedicated to providing Safety, Service, and Security to California citizens and everyone who uses the thousands of miles of our state’s roadways. On October 29, 2026, representatives from the CHP Museum in West Sacramento stopped by the CHP Indio Area office to create a display honoring the life of fallen Officer Daniel Muehlhausen. The display is located in the lobby of the Indio office.

Officer Muehlhausen’s Story

At approximately 11:00 am on June 1, 1997, Officer
Daniel “Dan” Muehlhausen (13933) was driving on
State Route 62 in the CHP Indio Area, heading to
assist a disabled driver, when his patrol vehicle was
struck by an oncoming vehicle attempting to pass
traffic as they traversed a blind dip in the two-lane
desert highway east of Palm Springs. The collision
caused both vehicles to burst into flames, killing Officer
Muehlhausen along with the driver and passenger in
the other vehicle. The driver had been warned earlier
in the day when another driver in his group of four
vehicles had been cited for attempting to pass unsafely.
Officer Muehlhausen was 30 years old. He graduated
from the CHP Academy in April 1995, and the CHP
Indio Area was his first and only assignment.

On the morning of August 21, 2026, an es**rt detail
carrying Officer Muehlhausen’s effects arrived at the
CHP Academy from Southern California. In Honor
Guard dress uniform were Officers Church and Wan-Yu
Tai (23719) from Southern Division, accompanied by
Indio Area Sergeants Eric Peña (15339) and Hector
Gutierrez (16674). Combined, the two sergeants have
served over 50 years in the Indio Area.

CHP Indio will be starting our 12 hour statewide Maximum Enforcement Period today at 6:00 pm. The CHP is increasing patrol to identify and arrest impaired drivers.

Please plan ahead and arrange a sober driver if you plan on drinking.

If you see a suspected impaired driver, call 911 to report what you observe.

It is with profound sadness that the California Highway Patrol announces the line-of-duty death of Officer Brian Liles of the Visalia Area.

On September 28, 2026, at approximately 5:11 p.m., CHP Motorcycle Officer Liles was involved in an on-duty traffic crash on State Route 99, just north of State Route 190 in Tipton. He sustained critical injuries and, despite lifesaving efforts, succumbed to his injuries at the scene.

Officer Liles, 44, served the people of California for more than 16 years. After graduating from the CHP Academy in 2010, he was assigned to the San Jose Area and later served in the Hayward and Fresno Areas before transferring to the Visalia Area in 2019.

Officer Liles is survived by his wife, two children, his parents, and two sisters.

The CHP extends its deepest condolences to Officer Liles’ family, friends, loved ones, and all who served alongside him. His dedication to public service and commitment to protecting the people of California will not be forgotten.

The Indio Area covers roads that travel through long stretches of open desert. Overturned vehicles seem to be a common occurrence in this part of the 10 freeway.
