To protect the lives, property, and environment of the people who live, work & play in Huntingtown MD The Huntingtown Volunteer Fire Dept. was chartered.

and Rescue Squad Inc., Co. 6, is located in Calvert County, Maryland approximately 5 miles north of Prince Frederick. As is the case with many communities, Huntingtown residents felt a need for their own fire and rescue service. Citizens got together and on February 24, 1972 the Huntingtown Volunteer Fire Department and Rescue Squad Inc. Local firefighters and citizens worked weekends and holidays

to construct the firehouse. It is located on MD Route 524 in the heart of Huntingtown's business district. Most of the labor was free and many of the building supplies were also donated. The entire building was built for under $70,000. The first piece of fire apparatus was a 1961 Ford/American La France purchased from the Forestville Volunteer Fire Department. The 750 gpm pumper with a 500 gallon booster tank cost $12,000. The money was raised through donations. The first ambulance was a 1968 Oldsmobile that formerly served the Waldorf Volunteer Fire Department and Rescue Squad. The departments auxiliary paid for the ambulance. The first call for help came on October 15, 1974, an emergency transport to University of Maryland Hospital in Baltimore. The first fire call came on October 23 for a brush fire on Route 4 north of Huntingtown. During the first three months of operation, 23 fire and 76 EMS calls were answered. Today Huntingtown has 2 class A engines, a tanker, 2 brush units, 2 ambulances (1 ALS), a heavy duty squad and 2 Suburbans. The department responded to 2611 calls in 2011. Huntingtown protects 45 square miles between the river and bay, and sits between Prince Frederick, North Beach and Dunkirk. Funding for day to day operations is provided by Calvert County but apparatus is funded by both the County and department. This is accomplished mainly through the Corvette Contest. To date the Huntingtown Volunteer Fire Department and Rescue Squad Inc. has contributed well over $500,000 to the purchase of new apparatus. Today the Huntingtown Volunteer Fire Department and Rescue Squad Inc. provides the following services:

Heavy Duty Rescue
Confined Space Rescue
Emergency Medical Services

🚨September Member Spotlight🚨

The Huntingtown Volunteer Fire Department is proud to recognize Dale Bowen as our September Member of the Month!

Dale joined HVFD in 1986 and has dedicated nearly four decades to serving our department and community. Throughout his years of service, Dale has held numerous leadership positions including Deputy Chief of EMS, Lieutenant, Captain, Vice President, President, Board Member, Board Chairman, and President of the Southern Maryland Volunteer Firemen’s Association (SMVFA).

Dale continues to serve the fire service beyond HVFD. He currently sells fire apparatus and remains actively involved with the Maryland State Firefighters’ Association (MSFA), including its legislative committee in Annapolis. In recognition of his outstanding contributions and distinguished service to the fire service, Dale was recently elected to the Firefighter Hall of Fame.

For Dale, volunteering has always been about giving back. He says he loves serving the citizens of Huntingtown and the surrounding communities—and that commitment runs deep in the Bowen family. Dale followed in the footsteps of his parents, who were charter members of HVFD. A fun piece of HVFD history: When Dale was just a year old, his parents hosted the department’s first monthly meeting in their basement!

Dale, thank you for your decades of commitment, leadership, and dedication to HVFD and the communities we serve. Your service and contributions have made a lasting impact.

Huntingtown Remembers one of their own

Six year ago today, Lieutenant Dylan Smith passed away after a battle with brain cancer. Dylan was a highly decorated firefighter, leader, and friend that will always be remembered by the department.

Today members visited Lt. Smith to pay respects and share stories. In true Dylan fashion, while in route to the cemetery, E62 was diverted for a bedroom fire in St Leonard. Members stopped by to pay their respects after the fire was extinguished and units returned to service.

Department Update

Following up on our statement from yesterday, the department would like to happily say that all members have returned home safely and are focusing on rest and recovery.

Official Statement from the Huntingtown Volunteer Fire Department and Rescue Squad, Inc.

Today at approximately 1000 hours, Ambulance 68 was returning to the station from a routine patient transport. While returning, the ambulance was involved in a single vehicle collision. No other vehicles were involved. All occupants of the ambulance were transported to local facilities for evaluation, all being members of the department.

Thoughts, prayers, and privacy for the department and members involved are welcome and appreciated.

Your Huntingtown Volunteers had the privilege yesterday to attend the North Beach Volunteer Fire Department’s Centennial Parade and Muster.

Members spent the week meticulously preparing apparatus, ensuring a parade ready finish. Their work was recognized with the reception of the Best Appearing Company Award!

We would like to thank North Beach VFD for the opportunity to participate, and congratulate them as they continue to celebrate one hundred years of service to their community and Calvert County!
