Thanks to everyone that came out for the 10th anniversary of the Montrose RDA/TIRZ 27. More than 100 people attended the What Makes Montrose, Montrose history presentation. Thanks to Jim Parsons of Preservation Houston for giving an engaging and informative talk about Montrose and its 100 years of history and evolution to what we see today. Also, thanks to the Ismaili Center Houston for hosting the event and providing refreshments and an amazing space in this beautiful new center. What a great community asset for Montrose and all of Houston. Special thanks to Travion Sells and Congresswoman Lizzie Fletcher for honoring our 10th anniversary with a Certificate of Recognition. Representative Fletcher has been very helpful in attaining federal funds for the West Alabama street reconstruction project and the Safe Routes to School sidewalk project. We look forward to the next 10 years!

Many of you have noticed the trees being replaced on Montrose Blvd. Here's the latest update:

During the peak heat of summer, the trees did not receive adequate watering. The trees were either dead or struggling to survive.

Cypress Trees Replaced - 28
Live Oak Trees Replaced - 8

The project specifications require replacement of all dead plants and all plants not in vigorous, thriving condition.

New trees were planted in the appropriate soil with heavy watering and mulch. The new trees were not root bound.

Contractor is watering six days per week unless it there is adequate rain. This watering frequency will continue until rainfall provides adequate moisture. Watering is via gator bags, which slowly releases the water throughout the day, and watering tubes, which allow water to be delivered to the roots and provides a visual inspection point for the contractor.

The contractor is watching the moisture levels more closely and will continue to monitor this closely through the remainder of the warranty period, especially during the summer.

And once again, this is at no additional cost to the TIRZ.

Our guest speaker, Jim Parsons, is Programs and Communications Director at Preservation Houston, where he leads public programs, tours and lectures on the city's architecture and history. Jim is an architectural historian and the co-author of four award-winning books, and he has spent more than two decades helping people see historic buildings as records of how we live and what comes next. He will share how a community that started more than a century ago grew into one of Houston's most distinctive neighborhoods.

The Montrose Parking Study equips community with tools to address parking challenges.

Montrose has an overall surplus of parking at most times of day and week. Where there are challenges, they are limited to specific locations at specific hours.

The study counted more than 33,500 spaces and gathered more than 2,000 community responses. It recommends a toolkit of parking management tools available through the City of Houston that residents and businesses can use to address specific problem areas. It does not recommend a new parking garage, and it does not propose metered parking on residential streets. The result: public funds will be kept available for what Montrose needs most, including the street, sidewalk, and public space improvements the RDA/TIRZ exists to deliver.

Good news! The City of Houston began construction on the Roseland Estates Street and Drainage Project. The Montrose TRDA/TIRZ is contributing $525,000 for the complete reconstruction of this neighborhood's sidewalks, spanning over 2 miles. We’re grateful to have contributed to this project.

There will be a 30-minute presentation on the parking study at the beginning of the Board Meeting. The presentation will review the study’s objectives, summarize the parking survey findings, and present the results of the supply-and-demand analysis. It will conclude with an overview of a proposed “parking toolkit,” including the benefits and challenges of various parking-management strategies and potential approaches to implementation.

We want to provide an update on the trees along Montrose Boulevard. Since our last statement, our team has met with the landscape architect, landscape contractor, and subcontractors, and each tree along the corridor has been evaluated.

The contractor will replace all affected trees this fall, at no cost to the TIRZ or the community, under the terms of the project warranty. In addition, the maintenance program is being strengthened to ensure the new trees receive the consistent care they need to establish and thrive, again at no cost to the TIRZ.

The trees along Montrose are critically important to the neighborhood, and we are committed to resolving this matter. Updates will continue to the posted on the Montrose Boulevard Project Page.
