Haddon Heights- Barrington Fire Department

On Saturday, October 24th, at approximately 5:19 pm the Haddon Heights - Barrington Fire Department and the Haddon Heights Police Department responded to the 1600 block of W. High Street in reference to a report of smoke coming from the side door of the residence. Upon arrival firefighters made entry into the home and located the victim, a 76-year-old male, who was found to be unresponsive in the kitchen area of the residence. The victim was immediately removed from the residence, and care was transferred to awaiting EMT’s. Unfortunately, the occupant had succumbed to his injuries. The structure fire was quickly extinguished by firefighters, and no other injuries were reported on scene. At this time the circumstances surrounding the fire do not appear suspicious. The investigation is ongoing and the names of all involved are being withheld pending further investigation.

25 years ago today, our world was forever changed. We will continue to never forget, and honor all 2,977 lives lost and all those who worked so selflessly to try to save others.

The Haddon Heights-Barrington Fire Department asks that you remember two special men from Haddon Heights that sprung into action both immediately following the attacks, and in the days following. Every 9/11 we aim to share their stories in hopes of ensuring that each generation knows what heroes look like.

Haddon Heights native Frank DeMartini was a construction manager with Port Authority and worked on the 88th floor in the North Tower of the World Trade Center. When the first plane struck, Frank proceeded to go up, floor by floor, selflessly helping others to escape. Frank DeMartini died when the North Tower collapsed. He is credited with saving at least 75 people. Some may recognize this name from the gym of the Haddon Heights High School.

In the days following 9/11, countless resources from across the country were deployed to Ground Zero to assist in the rescue and recovery efforts. Past HHFD Fire Chief and Camden County Deputy Fire Marshal Gene Dannenfelser answered the call and responded to Ground Zero. Chief Dannenfelser spent days at Ground Zero sorting through the rubble. Chief Gene Dannenfelser lost his battle with 9/11-related lung cancer on November 8, 2017. Chief Dannenfelser’s legacy continues on. Gene was instrumental in gaining support in NJ for the Firefighter Cancer Registry Act which was passed by United States Congress after his passing. This bill directs the CDC to track firefighter cancer rates and study the links between them.

Today, we ask that you keep the families of both Frank DeMartini and Chief Gene Dannenfelser, as well as the families of all who were lost on that day in your thoughts. We will never forget.

Today we remember Fire Police Captain Thomas J. Conway who passed on this day 22 years ago.

The Camden County Hero Scholarship Fund remembers Fire Police Captain Thomas J. Conway, from the Haddon Heights- Barrington Fire Department , who made the ultimate sacrifice on this day, August 2, 2004.

On July 29, 2004, while on a fire call and serving as a Fire Policeman, he began to have chest pains and was admitted to the hospital. Fire Police Captain Conway suffered from a heart attack, in which he died on August 2nd.

Fire Police Captain Conway joined the Haddon Heights Fire Department in 1947, and served for 57 years. He was a devoted husband and father‚ as well as a devoted firefighter. He joined the Haddon Heights Fire Department at the age of 20 and spent most of his time as a firefighter. In later years‚ Tom became Captain of the fire police.

The HHBFD is saddened to announce the death of life member Ron Sambucci.

Ron was one of our longest active members and extremely dedicated to the fire department.

Ron was not just an incredible asset to us as a fireman, but also as an amazing and humorous human being.

Ron will be deeply missed by not only us, but all of those who had the privilege of knowing him.

Our hearts go out to the Sambucci family.

On June 1, 2026, Ron passed away surrounded by family and close friends, after a long battle with kidney disease. Born and raised in Pennsauken, Ron graduated from Pennsauken High School. Last night Tyler Jackson was sworn in during the Haddon Heights council meeting to his new position as Lieutenant. This marks another historic milestone as the HHBFD adds a second full-time officer to our staff. This allows us to maintain two properly staffed platoons 365 days a year each with an officer.

Lieutenant Jackson has been with our department starting as an Explorer over 10 years ago and remained an active volunteer until his hiring full-time.

Haddon Heights residents, please be aware of the borough ordinance for street parking.

See below post from our partners regarding this information.

This is a reminder about Borough Ordinance 100-9. We understand that snowstorms and extreme temperatures create issues for many residents. We want to work together with our residents and DPW to ensure our roads are as safe as possible.

When there is a warning or prediction of possible snow or ice, ALL on-street parking is denied. This includes vehicles that have been issued overnight parking permits.

Since we do not know how much snow will fall within any given warning or prediction, we must treat each occurrence as if snow accumulation will necessitate plowing or sanding the streets, regardless of how much precipitation falls. Therefore, whenever there are warnings, forecasts, or predictions of snow and/or ice, please make other arrangements to park your vehicles off the street.

If you do not have a space to park your vehicle off-street:

First, please make every attempt to fit as many vehicles in your driveway as possible.

Second, there are Borough parking spaces along West/East Atlantic Ave, along the railroad track.

Third, if you do not have any other option, immediately clear any snow from your vehicle, then once an area around your house is plowed, move your vehicle to the plowed area. This will allow the plow trucks to remove the snow from where your vehicle was previously parked.

The HHBFD is once again asking for the public’s assistance with keeping hydrants clear!

We will be doing our best to clear hydrants as we come by them, but we remind citizens to please assist us as well.

Once again we are sharing a link for residents in both towns to use to mark hydrants either as cleared or not cleared.

A clear hydrant saves critical seconds or even minutes at a fire.
