She was in rough shape when she was dropped off at the Groton Police station. She was very out of it and barely able to walk. Animal Control officer Jodee feared the raccoon wouldn’t survive to the trip to us. We were all relieved to see she was still breathing when she arrived.

Knowing these could be symptoms of rabies, we were very cautious with her and were sure to put her in a quarantine space during assessment.
Everyone on our team is vaccinated for rabies as we work with many rabies vector species.

We’re also informed enough to know it was possible that she had gotten into something as well. Time would tell. If rabies - she would get worse, despite any supportive care.

I’m glad we waited and didn’t assume.

It’s been 4 days and she is a whole new raccoon. Whatever was in her system during that time seems to have flushed itself since she has been receiving supportive care.

She will remain in quarantine for another week but we expect her to make a full recovery. We are thankful to Jodee for driving her over to us on a weekend to make sure she got the care she needed.❤️

MEET YOUR ANIMAL CONTROL OFFICER: John

John isn't much of a social media guy, so he leaves that part to me. He'd probably prefer to stay out of the spotlight, but I think it's important to recognize the people who quietly dedicate so much of themselves to this job.

John has been an Animal Control Officer for Groton for "way too long to remember the exact year." Honestly, that tells you everything you need to know about his experience. When it comes to animal control, there isn't much John hasn't seen. He's one of those people with a wealth of knowledge that simply can't be taught in a classroom. It's the kind of experience that only comes from years on the job.

Outside of work, John is a father, a dog owner, and an experienced livestock owner. He raises an incredible herd of cattle and takes tremendous pride in producing quality animals. One of his greatest prides and joys was Red, one of his beloved cows- pictured below.

One of my favorite things about John is that he truly loves the calls where everything works out in the end. Whether it's rescuing a baby deer, getting a duck out of a fireplace (yes, that's not a typo... see the photo below!), or making the phone call to tell someone their dog has been found, those are the moments that make this job worthwhile for him.

On a personal note, I honestly don't know where I'd be in this career without John. He's known me since I was in the single digits, and I'm 27 now. Long before I became an Animal Control Officer, he was someone I looked up to because of his knowledge for animals.

If you've lived in Groton for a while, there's a good chance you've met John. He's helped generations of families and their animals over the years. In fact, I still get calls from residents who say, "Oh... I was expecting John!" It always makes me laugh because it shows just how much of an impact he's had on this community.

Now it's your turn! If John has ever helped you, your family, or one of your animals over the years, we'd love to hear your story in the comments. I'll make sure he sees every single one.

I figured I'd introduce myself first since I started this page, but don't worry, John and Tom will get their time to shine later this week!

My name is Jodee, and I'm one of the Animal Control Officers for the Town of Groton, as well as the Town's Animal Inspector. If you've seen comments on lost dog posts, found pet posts, or general animal safety reminders, chances are you've been talking to me.

Along with responding to animal calls, I also conduct kennel inspections (for households with four or more dogs) and our annual barn inspections.

I'm an ACOAM Certified Animal Control Officer and I'm also trained in Pet CPR.

I feel incredibly fortunate to work alongside John and Tom. John has known me since I was in the single digits (I'm 27 now!), and Tom has known me since I was a teenager. A few years ago, an Animal Inspector position became available, and Tom encouraged me to apply. I had no idea that one opportunity would become the first stepping stone into the career I have today. I truly love what I do.

In addition to Groton, I also proudly serve as an Animal Control Officer for two other towns. Each department is separate, and each community has given me opportunities that have helped shape me into the officer I am today.

Outside of work, I'm a mom, a dog owner, and a livestock owner. I know firsthand how much our animals mean to us. One thing I love about our team is that each of us brings different strengths, experiences, and schedules to the table, allowing us to better serve the Town of Groton together.

Thank you so much for following along and supporting our page! I look forward to getting to know the community and sharing helpful information, lost and found pets, educational posts, and general updates along the way.

If you ever need to reach me, you can email me at [email protected].

Help me grow our page by interacting with this post!

Drop a comment below and tell me about some of the animals you have here in Groton. Dogs, Cats, Horses, Chickens, Goats... I'd love to hear about them all, and feel free to share a photo!
