We had an absolute blast at the Spooktacular! Thanks to everyone who stopped by to see us. We saw our Storytime Crew, our Library Kids, and made a bunch of people pick Frankenstein's nose for candy. Turns out, there's an award for that! Big thanks to City of Gatlinburg, Gatlinburg Recreation Department, and Rocky Top Sports World - Gatlinburg, TN for being great hosts. It's one of our favorite events every year! Visit us and find out all the great things happening at APPL!

Did you know that East Tennessee had a major role in the Manhattan Project?

Renowned local storyteller Kathy Gwinn gave an engaging program, Atomic Appalachia, at Anna Porter Public Library on Thursday, September 10, 2026. The program explored how East Tennessee landed a key role in the Manhattan Project in World War II and how "the city behind the fence" was kept a secret from the public. Kathy was our first guest this season in the library’s successful Our Story series. The series was established in the Spring of 2024, and its mission is to teach and preserve Appalachian culture and Gatlinburg’s Smoky Mountain heritage.

Originally from Fargo, North Dakota, Kathy moved to the Smokies in 1999. She is a former history teacher and has worked as a Step-On Guide / Historian in the National Park and surrounding area for the past 27 years. One of the tours she takes groups to is known as the “Secret City” Tour.

On September 11, 2001, the world changed forever. We will always remember and honor those who sacrificed their lives to save others, as well as all who have perished on this tragic day 25 years ago.

Did you know that East Tennessee had a major role in the Manhattan Project?

Learn more TODAY with renowned local storyteller Kathy Gwinn at Anna Porter Public Library on Thursday, September 10, 2026, at 6 p.m. Kathy will be presenting her program, Atomic Appalachia, in the library’s successful Our Story series. The series was established in the Spring of 2024, and its mission is to teach and preserve Appalachian culture and Gatlinburg’s Smoky Mountain heritage.

This particular program touches on the contributions East Tennessee made during World War II, why East Tennessee became the foremost site of the Manhattan Project, and what all was involved in keeping “the city behind the fence” (the biggest military secret of the 20th Century) quiet.

Originally from Fargo, North Dakota, Kathy moved to the Smokies in 1999. She is a former history teacher and has worked as a Step-On Guide / Historian in the National Park and surrounding area for the past 27 years. One of the tours she takes groups to is known as the “Secret City” Tour.
