Cadets in Class 4-26A put their training into practice during Correctional Tactical Training, working through realistic scenarios that challenge them to respond effectively, professionally, and with sound judgment. Throughout this training, cadets learn the principles of defensive tactics, including proper stances, basic movements, ground defense, and striking techniques. These hands-on exercises help build the skills, coordination, and confidence needed to respond appropriately to challenging situations in the field. Developing effective defensive tactics, maintaining physical fitness, and continuously practicing these skills are essential to preparing for the challenges of the profession. Training begins at the Academy, but the commitment to readiness continues throughout a correctional officer’s career.

Class 4-26A is on the range. When it comes to fi****ms training, precision, discipline, and control are essential. For correctional peace officers, proficiency with a fi***rm is a serious responsibility that demands consistent training, sound judgment, and a commitment to safety. Under the guidance of our CDCR Academy Rangemasters, cadets are sharpening their marksmanship skills, reinforcing safe fi***rm handling practices, and building the confidence needed to perform under pressure. Through focused instruction and repetition, they are developing the skills required to meet the demands of the profession.

As Class 4-26A enters Week 7, they’re learning that this journey is about more than completing training. It’s about discovering their strength, defining their values, and becoming the leaders their future roles will demand. For some, this journey is about making their families proud. For others, it’s about proving to themselves that they’re capable of more than they ever imagined. Each cadet has a story, and each story is a reminder of what makes this journey meaningful. They came to the CDCR Academy with a purpose. They’re moving forward with determination. And with every week, they’re becoming the people they set out to be. Class 4-26A, keep pushing. Remember why you started, stay grounded in what matters, and take pride in how far you’ve come. Because the badge represents more than a finish line. It represents the sacrifices, character, and growth it took to get there.

Corrections 101: Building the Foundation. Class 4-26A continues building the fundamentals of correctional training through expandable baton instruction. Expandable baton training introduces cadets to the proper and responsible use of equipment they may carry in the performance of their duties. Through practical drills and guided instruction, cadets begin developing proficiency while learning the importance of control, sound decision making, and safety. This training is the starting point for skills officers will continue to strengthen through ongoing practice and in-service training throughout their careers.

We’re taking a closer look at how we prepare our cadets for the physical demands of this profession, not because what came before didn’t matter, but because we believe we can always do better. Physical fitness is about more than passing a test. It’s about building strength, endurance, resilience, and sustainable habits that can carry into a career of service. As we continue to evolve our approach to physical fitness, our goal remains the same prepare our cadets for the demands of the career and set them up for long-term success. We’re learning. We’re evolving. And we’re investing in the people who will serve California. Because the strongest foundation for a career starts with taking care of the person behind the uniform.

The Academy staff do more than train cadets. They also prepare and certify instructors who will carry that expertise back to their institutions. Our Rangemaster staff recently hosted Rangemaster certification training for personnel from across California, including Avenal State Prison, Kern Valley State Prison, Salinas Valley State Prison, California Medical Facility, and Wasco State Prison. Through this certification, these correctional professionals will return to their respective institutions equipped to lead and conduct fi****ms training within their own teams. The knowledge, experience, and standards established here at the Academy don’t stay here. They are carried forward, shared, and strengthened throughout CDCR. When we invest in those who teach others, the impact reaches far beyond the classroom.

Our cadets in Class 4-26A recently completed their Physical Fitness Test (PFT), giving us a snapshot of their strength, endurance, and fitness as they begin their Academy training. But fitness shouldn’t begin at the Academy or end at graduation. It should become part of who you are throughout your career with CDCR.
Taking care of yourself means being ready for the demands of the job, showing up for your partners, and having the strength to give your best when it matters most. Train before you arrive. Train while you’re here.
Keep training throughout your career. Wellness isn’t a finish line. It’s a lifelong commitment.
