πŸ¦‹βœ¨ We captured the eclosion of a monarch butterfly!
Β
At the Hessen Cassel Branch, monarch butterflies have become a gateway to learning about pollinators, migration, and how even small actions can make a difference.
Β
Hessen Cassel librarian Jen is a Certified Pollinator Steward and started the branch’s Monarch Conservation Project to give patrons a chance to observe the monarch life cycle up close.
Β
Jen collects fresh milkweed and monarch eggs from her yard and brings them to the branch, where patrons can watch the caterpillars grow, form their chrysalises, and, if they’re lucky, witness the moment they emerge as butterflies! With much excitement, staff then set the monarch butterfly free to carry on its journey. πŸ¦‹
Β
Monarchs need milkweed to lay their eggs and for their caterpillars to eat, and they need nectar sources along their migration route from Canada to Mexico. By planting milkweed and pollinator-friendly plants and avoiding harmful pesticides, we can all help create a safer path for these incredible butterflies.
Β
And that’s what makes this project so special: It’s not just about butterflies. It’s about curiosity, connection, and showing patrons that they aren’t too young or too old to make a difference. 🧑
Β
Want to learn more? Stop by the Hessen Cassel Branch during monarch season, August through mid-October, and see what you can discover!
Β
β€”
Video Description: The video starts with on-screen text reading, β€œWe caught it on camera! πŸ¦‹β€ as a monarch begins emerging from its chrysalis. Text then shares the monarch life cycle: Egg: 3–5 days; Caterpillar: 11–18 days; Chrysalis: 8–14 days; Eclose: emerge as a butterfly. The Eclose stage is highlighted. The butterfly fully emerges and hangs upside down, moving its antennae and legs as it adjusts to being outside its chrysalis.
