The quad skate dates all the way back to the Civil War era, but it was post-WWII that roller skating really boomed. By 1950 there were 5,000 rinks in America, including one at Flint Park Lake, the Rollercade. One of the few local survivors is Rollhaven on S. Saginaw St. Were you ever a roller skater? The Buick City Welcomes You billboard on 1-75 was iconic, but who remembers that only appeared in the mid-80s when The Buick was rebranded Buick City? Before that time Welcome to Buick Town graced the sign, as seen in this shot promoting the '66 Buick Sportwagon.

This community event is part of Genesee County’s America 250 Celebration. The Panel will focus on what has occurred in Genesee County to expand the “All Men Are Created” Promise of the Declaration of Independence.

Please be advised that several streets in downtown Flint will be closed to traffic on Monday, October 12, 2026, in connection with funeral services for Mundy Township Police Chief Bade.

The following closures are expected:
Beach Street from 2nd Street to 4th Street
2nd Street between Church Street and Beach Street
3rd Street between Church Street and Beach Street
4th Street between Church Street and Beach Street

Expect closures by 8am, with services starting at St. Matt's at 9:45am. Those who work in or travel through downtown Flint are encouraged to plan accordingly and allow additional time for travel and parking.
