Attention rising Juniors and Seniors - Announcing a once in a lifetime opportunity to participate in America’s 250th Anniversary Celebration!

As Pennsylvania celebrates our nation’s 250th anniversary, members of the state House have a unique opportunity to recognize the state House’s central role in the country’s founding by participating in a House Session to be held at Congress Hall in Philadelphia on Wednesday, Sept. 9, 2026, returning our institution to its meeting place in 1776.

As part of this historic event, one student from each legislative district is invited to attend the event for a civic learning initiative, developed in partnership with America250PA. The purpose of the student event is to engage high school students in learning about government and civic responsibility and to honor Pennsylvania’s foundational role in the founding of America.

Participation in the full-day civic learning experience in Philadelphia, will include:

• Educational programming focused on Pennsylvania government and history
• Opportunities to engage with public officials and civic leaders
• Participation in activities connected to the Semiquincentennial commemoration

Lunch, dinner, and a dessert reception will be provided for students on September 9th. A travel stipend will also be provided as well as one night of hotel accommodation for students traveling more than 50 miles.

All selected students must be accompanied to Philadelphia by a parent or guardian, who will be required to sign the student in at check-in and out at the conclusion of the program. This requirement applies to all participants, including students who are 18 years old. Parents and guardians will not participate in scheduled programming and are encouraged to explore Historic Philadelphia during the day.

*** To be considered, I am asking for interested students to submit a short essay on the topic “Pennsylvania’s Significance in America’s Founding.” Essays must meet the following criteria:

• Entrants must be a high school rising junior or senior.
• Essays must be typewritten, double spaced and no more than 300 words in length.
• Entries may be typed in an email or may be typed in a word processor and saved as a PDF attachment. Note: No other attachments other than Adobe PDF will be accepted.
• All entries must be labeled with the entrant’s name, age, parent name(s) and contact email, phone number and home address. (This is necessary to reach out to the winners of the essay contest and will not be used for any other purpose.)
• Only one entry per person is allowed.
• The winner will be selected from among entrants by an essay review panel.

Essays must be submitted by Wednesday June 10th at 4:30 p.m. and can be submitted via email to [email protected] or by paper at my office at 132 Locust St. Unit 102, Columbia, PA.

One student from the 41st district will be selected to attend.

I recently attended the Penn State Health Children's Lancaster Pediatric Center’s open house event, and was glad for the opportunity to meet several pediatric specialists, explore their child-friendly facility, and receive updates from Penn State Health leaders on how pediatric care is growing to better serve local families. The Penn State Health Pediatric Center is located by the Park City Mall at the old Toys “R” Us site, 1430 Harrisburg Pike, Lancaster.

One of the highlights of the visit for me was the opportunity to tour the Life Lion helicopter, which made a special appearance at the event, and to speak with flight paramedic, Frank Ceresini. The Life Lion ground and flight crews safely transport critically ill children and adults throughout a 150 mile radius; I am tremendously grateful for their dedication in this important line of work.

Freedom is not free.

That was the theme of this year’s Hempfield Memorial Day ceremony, held yesterday at the Hempfield Fire Department pavilion.

Thank you to all - especially the many local veterans - who participated in and attended this wonderful annual event.

I encourage you to make a point this weekend to attend a local Memorial Day commemoration to offer respect for those who have served and for those who have given their lives to protect our freedoms. There will be several ceremonies and parades in our district this coming weekend:

COLUMBIA

The Columbia Memorial Day ceremony and parade will begin at noon on Sunday with the Bainbridge Band’s patriotic concert in Locust Street Park in the gazebo, followed by the Memorial Day parade at 2:30 p.m.

MOUNTVILLE

The annual Mountville VFW-sponsored Memorial Day Parade will step off at 10 a.m. on Saturday. The parade route begins at the Mountville Community Center (formerly the Mountville Elementary School) on Clay Street and ends at the Mountville Community pool/Froelich Park on Main Street.

Immediately after the parade, at 11:30 a.m., there will be a brief but poignant ceremony to honor our veterans at the Mountville Cemetery (intersection of Orkney Road and Hill Street). As part of the ceremony, those attending will have the opportunity to decorate the graves of our veterans. I have the honor of being the guest speaker at this ceremony.

LANDISVILLE-SALUNGA

All local residents are invited to attend the annual Hempfield Memorial Day ceremony, starting at 2 p.m. on Sunday. This event is held in the Hempfield Fire Department's pavilion, 19 W. Main St., Landisville.

The theme this year is Memorial Day: Freedom Is Not Free.

The event features:
• Red Rose Veteran Honor Guard.
• Vet21 Salute Honor Guard.
• March Masters Band.
• Dayspring Christian School Choir.

Hear from guest speaker Shane A. Bladen, Lt. Colonel, U.S. Marine Corps, and student essay contest winners as they share their thoughts on Memorial Day. I am honored to serve as the emcee for this wonderful annual ceremony.

My legislative office, as well as most state offices, will be closed on Monday in honor of the holiday. PennDOT centers are closed Saturday and Monday.

How Our Government Works: Centerville Elementary Students

I enjoyed the opportunity to speak with to the 4th grade class at Centerville Elementary School on the topic of our government and how it works. The students have been learning about our state government through their classes and their recent visit to the Capitol. I was glad to visit their class and discuss the legislative process and answer their questions. I was impressed with their knowledge of Pennsylvania and the structure of our government.

The students demonstrated their understanding of the legislative process in a mock session where we introduced, debated, and voted on a bill that would establish the state candy of Pennsylvania. It was a lively debate with all the students actively engaged. I want to especially thank the teachers Jenn Martzall, Ronda Anderson, and Stephanie Fitzgerald for their dedication and for the opportunity to visit and spend some time with the students.

This Sunday, May 24, the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission (PFBC) will host a Fish for Free day to allow anyone (resident or non-resident) to fish legally on all Pennsylvania waterways. No license is required, but all other fishing regulations still apply.

This is the first of two dates set by the PFBC to enhance fishing opportunities. The next day is Independence Day, Saturday, July 4. This is a great way to introduce the next generation of anglers to the outdoors.
