"The criminal legal system demands black­-and­-white categorizations that real human beings do not fit into: Offenders kill, victims die; offenders are monsters, victims are angels. By using violence to live, a woman cannot be a victim or an angel; she must therefore be an offender. There is no other space into which she fits."

A plea deal kept Keshia Golden out of prison, but only a governor’s pardon can recognize what she says was self-defense.

CAASE is saddened to hear about the passing of feminist activist Gloria Steinem. While we mourn, we also reflect and find joy in a life full of creating change. She accomplished so much and sustained incredible advocacy over decades of her life, never wavering in the fight for equality.

Gloria was an active participant in efforts to get the Gender Violence Act passed here in Illinois, which allowed gender-based violence survivors to sue perpetrators. Gloria was a long-time supporter of CAASE’s efforts, specifically to advance the survivor model. We remain deeply grateful for all that she did to support this work, and countless other feminist causes, bringing the public’s attention to issues of gender justice and inspiring waves of new generations to get involved.

CAASE was thrilled to have Gloria headline three fundraisers for CAASE and the Women’s Media Center in 2013, pictured here. We’ll always be humbled to have had her support in this work. We will all continue to be inspired by a life lived envisioning and working towards a more just and equal world for women everywhere.

Surviving the Mic: Virtually Together is two weeks away on Thursday, Sept. 17!

This monthly event is an online gathering space for survivors of s*xual harm and those who support them, personally or professionally. The gathering begins with a check-in and dialogue on current events, followed by a trauma-informed writing workshop designed for survivors of s*xual harm. Attendees are invited to share their writing, if comfortable. We hope to see you there!

Survivors harmed in the military deserve just accountability and justice. Sexual harm shouldn't be a price anyone is expected to pay, in any career.

Survivors of military s*xual trauma have long been barred from suing the government over assaults and the failures that allowed them to happen. A bipartisan bill would give them a path to court.
