The Chapel Hill Fire Department (CHFD) provides fire protection, basic rescue and first responder medical services to the Town of Chapel Hill and the University of North Carolina, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The department operates from 5 fire stations located strategically across the community and staffed by 93 employees. We respond to over 4000 incidents each year ranging from house fires a

nd heart attacks to vehicle accidents and hazardous conditions. The CHFD proudly carries an Insurance Services Office (ISO) rating of 3 which enables residents and businesses to enjoy low property insurance premiums. All Chapel Hill firefighters and fire officers are certified to at least North Carolina Level II Firefighters. The department is also a partner in the Triangle Region 8 Urban Search and Rescue Team with Fire Departments from Cary, Durham and Raleigh. The CHFD operates a fire training center adjacent to Fire Station #4 and the Durham Technical Community College Fire Academy is based there. The annual budget of the CHFD is approximately $7 million. The department protects an estimated $7,036,258,326 worth of property, $4,782, 902,841 which is attributed to the University. The CHFD is home to the famous Carolina Blue fire trucks and is proud to be the UNC Tar Heels fire protection. Our firefighters are well trained and dedicated to provide the best possible emergency services to our citizens and visitors. It's back to the classroom for Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools and we had a great time at Town of Chapel Hill's Roll & Stroll event this past weekend.

Roll and Stroll is a free, family-friendly block party that celebrates our community's love of walking, rolling, and strolling!

Firefighters showed off the inside of the fire trucks and the important components on the outside that help them keep our community safe when the need arises.

Join us in saluting our Chapel Hill Fire Rescue Academy Class 9 graduates on a job well done.

Months of classroom lectures, evolutions on the drill ground, and their own grit and determination have brought them to this moment. They answered the call, put in the work, and have proved they are ready to serve our community with courage, honor, and resoluteness. Transitioning onto our engines is a significant milestone for both the firefighters and their families, and we are eager to see them step up to the challenge. It means a new lifestyle, deep crew trust, and responding without hesitation whenever the community needs them – day or night.

To our newest firefighters: keep learning, stay humble, and wear the uniform with pride!

The Town of Chapel Hill is moving ahead with plans to build a new Fire Station 4 and make space for an affordable housing development at the intersection of Weaver Dairy Road Ext. and Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd.

“We’re incredibly excited to build a new station to serve our community and create a new, modern home for our dedicated crews,” said Fire Chief Jay Mebane.

Chapel Hill Fire-Rescue, Carrboro Fire-Rescue, UNC Police and Carolina Softball have partnered to host a fun-filled event benefiting families staying at the Ronald McDonald House.

There will be a Carolina Softball meet-and-greet, Touch-a-Truck, kids running the bases, face painting and more.

Then, at 1 p.m., watch UNC Police as they face off against Chapel Hill and Carrboro firefighters in a charity softball game! Admission is free on a first-come, first-serve basis.
