Early this morning, at approximately 0300 hours, Mortlake firefighters responded with East Brooklyn Fire Department for a smoke odor investigation at the 1 Stop Mini-Mart, located across from Classic Pizza.

Upon arrival, crews discovered smoke coming from the building’s parapet, prompting the incident to be upgraded to a structure fire. A first alarm was struck, bringing in additional resources from Danielson, South Killingly Fire, and from Atwood Hose Fire Company who provided their rapid intervention team.

The incident resulted in minimal damage to the store, which is currently open and operating as normal.

The Brooklyn Fire Marshal’s Office is continuing to investigate the cause of the fire.

We thank our mutual aid partners for their assistance!

Last night at 9:08 PM, Mortlake and East Brooklyn firefighters responded to a single-vehicle motor vehicle accident at the intersection of Stetson Road and Route 6.

Crews from ET-190 worked to extinguish the involved vehicle while ambulance personnel and crew from R490 provided patient care. A second ambulance was requested, and KB Ambulance responded to assist.

Please remember when approaching a scene to SLOW DOWN AND MOVE OVER.

Due to several recent incidents in town and the surrounding area, we are urging everyone to use caution and to dig deep to find some common sense to utilize when behind the wheel.

Recently, our ambulance crew had quite the scare when a driver decided to turn left on red (don’t remember that in driving school) while our ambulance was clearing an intersection. This could have easily resulted in a serious crash, putting our crew and others at risk. Thankfully, that wasn’t the outcome. Luckily our crews operate with due to regard for yours and their own safety!

Too many people are in such a hurry to get nowhere that they don’t stop to think about the consequences of their actions. Saving a few seconds isn’t worth risking someone else’s life, yet some drivers won’t think twice about putting yours in danger just to get where they’re going a little faster.

Connecticut General Statutes § 14-283 requires motorists to yield to approaching emergency vehicles and, when required, pull to the right, clear intersections, and stop until the emergency vehicle passes.

Our firefighters and EMS personnel are your neighbors, friends, and family. They deserve to make it to their calls safely, just as everyone deserves to make it home safely.

Just remember driving is a privilege not a right. Slow down. Pay attention. Make better decisions behind the wheel. No destination is worth a life.

We’ve received a lot of questions about our hose tender since sharing the news that the membership voted to bring it back! Warning this post is definitely for the fire buffs as it’s longer than normal!

The 1986 Mack RM6864x was delivered to Mortlake in 1987 by Darley, and it was purpose-built to do one job: lay large-diameter hose efficiently over long distances while allowing firefighters to focus on other critical fireground operations.

Here are some of the details that make this truck special:

- Power and Drivetrain: Built on a four-wheel-drive Mack chassis, it features a Mack EM6285 285-horsepower diesel engine paired with a manual transmission. The conventional cab seated two firefighters, or three if you squeezed!

- Pumping Capacity: The truck is equipped with a 1,500-gallon-per-minute, single-stage Darley Champion LDM pump. A 700-gallon steel water tank was installed forward of the pump to help with weight distribution. Using only the 30' 6" pre-connected front suction it would flow 1400-gpm at 10' draft; if the second 30' suction was connected to the steamer inlet it would flow 1800-gpm which was typical Darley Champion pump performance.

- Large-Diameter Hose Reel: Built by Sturtevant, the hydraulically operated reel carries approximately 4,600 feet of five-inch large-diameter hose. 400 additional feet was stored in a small covered hose bed above the cross-body compartment.

- The hose was primarily loaded in 200-foot yellow sections, with 100-foot red sections positioned halfway through the reel and near the core. These red sections served as visual indicators, helping the driver estimate how much hose had been deployed and how much remained by watching the rear-facing camera.

- Built for the Job: The driver could operate the reel’s hydraulic controls from inside the cab. The first several hundred feet of hose were powered off at the scene to establish an anchor, allowing the truck to continue pulling hose from the reel as it moved away. At sharp turns, the driver relied on the camera to monitor the hose deployment.

- Suction Equipment: The truck carried a 30-foot, six-inch preconnected “squirrel tail” suction line, along with an additional 30-foot section of six-inch suction hose strapped to the top of the hose bed.

- A Unique Priming System: One of the truck’s most impressive features was its hydraulic-driven primary primer, a pump typically used on septic tank trucks. It could prime a single 30-foot suction with a 10-foot lift in just 10 seconds. The backup electric primer took well over a minute to accomplish the same task.

Because the truck’s hose reel was hydraulically operated, it could deploy thousands of feet of hose while requiring fewer personnel to manage the operation, allowing additional firefighters to be assigned to other valuable fireground tasks.

And this truck has certainly put in the work.

In November 2023, during the Ballouville Mill Fire, Hose Tender 190 pumped continuously for 14½ hours, beginning at 2:00 a.m. That’s a remarkable shift for a truck that has been serving our community for nearly forty years. Mack Trucks

The membership has voted to move forward with bringing our hose tender back into active service!

The hose tender has been a staple of Mortlake Fire Company since the truck first arrived in the 1980s, and we’re so excited to see it getting the attention it needs to return to the fireground.

A huge thank you to Tommy for putting in the time and effort to complete the testing and repairs needed to get this beast back on the road and ready to serve our community! Mack Trucks

At 05:24 this morning, Mortlake and the East Brooklyn Fire Department were dispatched to a two car motor vehicle accident at 4 Wolf Den Rd.

Upon arrival, crews found one of the vehicles into the building. Minor injuries were reported, and one patient was transported to a local hospital for further evaluation.

A reminder to drivers:

• Flashing red means STOP before entering the intersection.

• Flashing yellow means proceed only with caution.

Stay alert, and use caution when approaching intersections.

Our Board recently approved the purchase of new saws for Mortlake, helping us keep our equipment up to date and we are so grateful! Great job Lt. McMahon for getting them ordered!

The second photo shows one of our old saws. Take a look at the Sharpie marking on it “West Wauregan Fire Department.” West Wauregan merged with Mortlake in 1994, so this piece of equipment carries a little piece of our department’s history with it.

See what happens when you care for things! After 32 plus years it finally gets to retire!

Last night, members of Mortlake Fire Company spent the evening training with our neighbors the East Brooklyn Fire Department.

We focused on vehicle extrication and got some good hands-on time with our E-Tools and ram, including working through dash rolls and different ways to gain access to a patient.

With the number of backroads in our area, along with Routes 6, 169, and 205, our departments unfortunately see our fair share of motor vehicle accidents where extrication is needed. Training together like this gives us a chance to work with each other, use the equipment we carry, and stay familiar with the techniques we need.
