Woodville Experience | The Neville House

Home of Col. Daniel Morgan. Established in 1775 by Gen. John Neville

Presley Neville, aid-de-camp to the Marquis de Lafayette, chief burgess of Pittsburgh, surveyor, Federalist, and son-in-law of Gen. Woodville (Neville House) was built in 1785, and has a long been an important historic landmark. After 200 years of residential occupancy by just three families, the house opened to the public in the 1970s, was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1983, and has been lovingly restored to its original condition. Initially the house of John Neville, a Fort Pitt commander and tax collector during the Whiskey Rebellion, our heritage is deeply rooted in Western Pennsylvania and the city of Pittsburgh. As one of the oldest residences in the city, and an excellent example of the developments in local architecture, and daily life in the late 1700s and early 1800s, Woodville has something for every enthusiast.

Woodville survived!!

Washington gets all the glory for stopping the Wh***ey Rebellion, but Pittsburgh farmers marched first on a tax collector's home near Bridgeville. 🔥 John Neville, federal revenue inspector, defended Woodville in 1794 while rebels attacked his other house.

Woodville's oldest part dates to 1775. Farmers were beaten back there, but Bower Hill burned on July 17, 1794, and Washington sent troops in the first test of federal authority. 🏠

Woodville survived, became a National Historic Landmark in 1983, and still stands on Washington Pike. Follow Pittsburgh Did What? for a Pittsburgh story like this every day

Preserving history, one gravestone at a time.

Cemetery restoration is an important part of caring for the legacy of Old St. Luke's Church. Through ongoing restoration efforts, historic gravestones are carefully preserved so the stories of those who came before us can continue to be remembered and honored for generations to come.

240 years ago today, Presley Neville sent a letter to George Washington informing him that he was victorious in his trial at Washington PA. Neville was likely present for the hearing, after having been in Washington's company two years prior at Miller's Run.

Eight years after George Washington recovered his Miller's Run tract, he entrusted Presley Neville with advice on selecting an honest land agent to oversee rent collection.
