Education—not elimination—is the key to preventing human-bear conflict. 🐻

Black bears are part of CT's ecosystem, and learning how to coexist with them is essential to keeping both people and bears safe. Addressing attractants, securing trash, and understanding bear behavior can help prevent conflicts before they start.

Lethal control doesn’t address the root causes of conflict. Without meaningful prevention, the cycle can continue.

Explore educational resources, fact sheets, and tips for peacefully coexisting with black bears in Connecticut.

Balloons don’t simply disappear when they float away. They eventually return to the ground, where they can harm wildlife through ingestion and entanglement while contributing to litter and habitat contamination. Prohibiting intentional balloon releases was a win for animals in CT's 2026 Legislative Session! 🎈

This snake skin found inside a rodent bait box is a reminder that these boxes can attract more than just rodents. When SGARs enter the food chain, the effects can ripple through the ecosystem, putting predators like owls, hawks, eagles, and foxes at risk of secondary poisoning.

It’s time to ban these dangerous poisons and protect Connecticut’s wildlife before more animals are harmed!📢🦉

Step by step, we’re getting closer to a statewide ban on SGARs.

It starts small. One town. One policy. One victory at a time.

Newtown. Southbury. And more communities are taking action to keep dangerous rodenticides off municipal property and protect wildlife from Second Generation Anticoagulant Rodenticides (SGARs).

The wait is over. Meet Bubba, the inaugural Face of CVA! 🎉 🐾

Earlier this week, we announced that longtime CVA supporter Karen Marrotte had been randomly chosen as the winner of the very first Face of CVA Lottery.

Her prize? The honor of choosing one special animal to represent CVA for the remainder of 2026.

Karen chose Butch, better known as Bubba, her beloved German Shepherd.Bubba's story began at Middletown Animal Control, where he was born just 24 hours after his mother arrived from a puppy mill. Just a few days later, Bubba arrived at the animal shelter where Karen volunteered. What started as a temporary foster arrangement quickly blossomed into something much more.
As Bubba settled into his new home, the bond between them grew stronger, and Karen soon realized she couldn’t possibly give him up.
As Karen puts it, "His big, brown eyes told me the story."

Today, this clever boy can be found enjoying a game of chase with his two siblings and is rarely seen without favorite ball or toy.

Karen, thank you for sharing Bubba with all of us. We could not imagine a better way to celebrate the very first Face of CVA.

For the rest of 2026, you’ll see Bubba representing CVA and reminding us what’s at the heart of our work: behind every policy we advocate for and every protection we fight to strengthen are the animals who make that work matter.

And to our new animal ambassador, welcome to the family!❣️

Every animal has a story worth celebrating. This is Bubba’s.

Back in August, we launched the inaugural Face of CVA Lottery with one very important prize: the chance to choose the animal who will become the very first Face of CVA.

After weeks of anticipation, the moment has finally arrived. The winner of the inaugural Face of CVA Lottery is…

🎉 Karen Marrotte! 🎉

As a longtime monthly supporter of CVA, Karen has been pivotal in making our work to protect animals possible. We could not be more excited that she will now help us make a little CVA history.

But winning the lottery was only the beginning. Karen now has to make one very important decision: which animal will become the inaugural Face of CVA?

The winner has been chosen. The Face has not.
October 10th. Be ready. Stay tuned.

If an animal is being abused, who else could be at risk? 🐾🫂

Animal cruelty doesn’t always happen in isolation. Research has shown a connection between animal abuse and other forms of family violence—a relationship known as The Link.

That’s why Connecticut has a cross-reporting law designed to help connect the dots. When Animal Control Officers suspect animal cruelty or DCF employees suspect animal abuse or neglect, they can share information when a child or animal may also be at risk.

There are still gaps in our cross-reporting system. Other professionals who may encounter signs of abuse—including veterinarians, law enforcement, health care providers, domestic violence advocates, and others—aren’t currently included in the same reporting requirements.

West Hartford is taking a step toward smarter, wildlife-friendly waste management!🗑️

New subterranean trash cans are helping reduce access to waste for rodents, insects, scavengers, and other wildlife while also reducing odors and the amount of time trash needs to be collected.

That’s a win for cleaner public spaces and wildlife!
