Now, Driver D, we’ve gotta get these kids reading more, so please stop playing 😂! Ive got books to deliver to these kids!

One of the biggest ways to get kids reading more is by increasing their access to books. The easier it is for a child to grab a book, especially one they can call their own and keep right on their nightstand, the more opportunities they have to practice reading.

Those early moments of practice can help children build the skills they need to stay on track and reach important reading and literacy milestones.

And that’s why we’re loading up and hitting the road this Christmas on a free book tour getting more books into the hands of kids who need access to them. Dolly Parton’s Coat of Many Colors is actually on my linked book wish list right now, so if you want to help us get more great stories into kids’ hands, you know where to look. 📚 🔗🔗

Could Little Red Riding Hood be Black? Well, yes, of course.

Folktales travel, change, and belong to whoever is carrying them forward and telling their tales next.

As a librarian, let me explain folklore and folktales.

Folktales are part of a long oral tradition of storytelling popular worldwide, including in African American culture, which has a long and rich oral storytelling tradition.

While some of the famous folktales you have heard of may have been written down and credited to the person who first recorded them, that does not necessarily mean they were the first creator of the story.

I like to think of folktales as one story that has been written by thousands of people over thousands of years.

So yes, Little Red Riding Hood could be Black. She could be Asian. She could be a pig or a frog. She could be anything you can imagine.

Her identity belongs to whoever is creating it and whatever mouth her story is coming out of.

Black fairytale Fairytale retelling, folktale retelling.

A Baltimore librarian quit her full-time job after kids on her stoop told her they didn’t have a single book at home. Now Storybook Maze runs a green-and-gold trolley that gives free books to 50 to 130 readers a day. Her goal is 500,000 books in five years.

The Gen Z teens yearn for horror and manga. Come teen book shopping with me at Ollie’s discount store. What should i buy? Drop your book recommendations in the comments. Sometimes in order to get teen to read in book deserts, you have to match their reading interest.

So grateful and thankful to be featured in this beautiful piece about my work in book deserts and the magical and innovative ways we’ve implemented to get books into the hands of children and families who otherwise would not have them.

Thank you TODAY so much for sharing my story and helping shine a light on the importance of bringing books directly to communities. 💛

Thinking about Gloria Steinem, who helped create Take Our Daughters to Work Day. But did you know there were other leaders who helped shape the movement too? I’ve added some of them to the list.

I do this because I want children to have access to stories about people who changed the world and books can be windows, mirrors, and glass doors, helping them see all the possibilities of who they can become. Access to these stories means access to the possibilities.

Inspired by the work of Dolly Parton and Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, I believe every child deserves access to books that help them dream, imagine, and see themselves in the stories they read. ❤️

Hi, I’m a Radical Street Librarian, giving away free books in book deserts. But I do so much more than just give away books. I use my expertise and years of experience working in libraries to curate collections that reflect the needs and interests of each community.

That can mean books with characters who look like them, books that offer escapism, or books that teach kids to love themselves.

Today, this little reader found a book celebrating natural hair. Black hair is beautiful, and there’s nothing we can’t do. 💪🏿
