⚠️ WARNING: Fake Evite Invitation Scam — Don't Click That Link

What's happening:
Since the beginning of the year, there has been a significant uptick in phishing scams where criminals use Evite's branding and formatting to trick people into clicking malicious links. Even Evite itself says these fake invitations look remarkably similar to the real thing. And because the emails are spoofed, they feel like they're coming from someone you actually know.

Scammers often use email addresses that look almost identical to legitimate ones, with tiny changes like an extra letter, a missing character, or a different domain extension.

🚩 Red Flags to Watch For

You weren't expecting an invite from that person, or it seems out of character

The link URL looks off — hover over any button before clicking and look for misspellings or extra characters

Vague event details: words like just "Party" or "Event" with no specifics are a red flag

A sense of urgency: pressure to RSVP quickly is a classic manipulation tactic

You're asked to log in just to view the invitation. Real Evites don't require that.

💀 What Can Happen If You Click
When you click the "View Invitation" button, you're often redirected to a page that looks exactly like a login screen for Gmail, Outlook, or Evite itself — designed to steal your credentials. In some cases, simply visiting the page silently installs malware in the background. One specific threat identified in this year involves remote access tools that allow scammers to literally see your screen, move your mouse, and access your files as if they were sitting at your desk.

✅ What to Do If You Get One
If you haven't clicked anything:

Contact the supposed sender directly, in person or by phone, text, or a separate email to ask if they actually sent an invitation. This simple step can save you.

Mark it as spam and report it as a phishing email in your mail app.

If you already clicked a link:

Immediately put your phone or device in Airplane Mode to kill the connection — this is a critical first step if you accidentally click, since some links trigger malware downloads.

Change your email password immediately from a different device.
Enable two-factor authentication on your accounts, monitor your financial accounts, and consider freezing your credit.

If it looks like a scammer mimicked a friend's email address, notify that person so they can secure their account.

Report it:

File a report with the Federal Trade Commission at reportfraud.ftc.gov and the FBI's Internet Crime Complaint Center at ic3.gov.

Bottom line: Scammers play on our desire to feel included, reassure us with familiarity, and count on us not checking the small details. Slow down, hover before you click, and when in doubt, call your friend or delete.

Please be careful.

Atascadero Senior Center's "Dance Through the Decades" fundraiser was a tremendous success — and an absolute blast! Thank you to everyone who joined us for a fun-filled evening of dancing and celebration.

A heartfelt thank you to our generous sponsors: Kiwanis Club of Atascadero, Mr. Pickle's Sandwich Shop, Bravo Pizza Plus, Legends Salon, and A-Town Diner. Your support was invaluable to the event.

We are also deeply grateful to all the locals who contributed raffle prizes, which added so much fun and excitement to the evening: Cielo Ristorante and Rooftop Bar, Vons, La Parilla Taqueria, Guest House Grill, Kennedy Club Fitness, Mr. Putter's Putt Putt, Chalk Mountain Golf Course, Streetside Ale House and Eatery, Kula Hawaiian Kitchen, Miramar Western Wear and Feed, Negranti Creamery, Starbucks, Ancient Owl Beer Garden and Bottle Shop, Sylvester's Burgers, local author Joanne Conner, Julie Dunn Fine Art, Joy's Garden of Qi, and Meowface Music.

Adding a truly personal touch, our own members donated a wonderful array of raffle prizes — from homemade cakes and pies to hand-crafted quilts and blankets, and so much more.

And let's not forget the crew of wonderful volunteers who did the planning and worked in the trenches. What a dream team!

It truly takes a village, and this event was a perfect example of our community at its best. We couldn't have done it without each and every one of you — sponsors, donors, volunteers, and guests alike. Thank you one and all!

On Tuesday, April 21, from 10:30–noon, we are honored to welcome Susan Quinones, RN, for a powerful and informative presentation on end-of-life options in California, including Medical Aid in Dying as provided under the California End of Life Option Act.

Susan is an RN trained in Hospice and Palliative Care and has worked with Wilshire Hospice in San Luis Obispo for many years. She brings both deep experience and compassion to this conversation.

Why this matters—for everyone:
End-of-life planning isn’t just for seniors. Life is unpredictable.

Taking time now to understand your options can:
Reduce stress for your family
Ensure your wishes are honored
Bring real peace of mind

Being informed makes it easier to have these conversations before they become urgent.

We hope you’ll join us, and invite your friends, family, and neighbors to this free event. Donations are very much appreciated.

Tuesday, April 21 • 10:30–noon, 5905 East Mall
