BEYOND THE MMC CAMPUS: EDUCATION of the DUMAGATS in NORZAGARAY, BULACAN
As we celebrate Indigenous Peoples Month this October, the MMC Museum and Library takes this opportunity to share a little-known chapter in the history of Metro Manila College and its continuing connection with the Dumagat community.
As early as 1991, MMC founder Dr. Mamerto S. Miranda Sr. established the Metro Manila College Elementary Department–Ipo Dam Site Branch at San Mateo, Norzagaray, Bulacan, extending the reach of the institution beyond its main campus. The school offered free Basic Education to the members of Dumagat Tribe. Unfortunately, it only lasted until 1995, when the school had to be closed due to the Founder’s death.
More than two decades later however, the idea to pursue giving free education to the IPs was revived when MMC’s Corporate Responsibility Arm, the Gawad Metronian Educational Foundation, Inc. (GMEFI) was launched on March 5, 2016. The partnership between Metro Manila College (MMC), through GMEFI, and Bro. Martin Francisco, Chairperson of the SAGIP Sierra Madre Environmental Society, Inc. (SSMESI) and leader of the Punduhan ng mga Dumagat center, this time at Sitio Suha in Norzagaray, Bulacan, was forged.
The project focused on empowering and providing higher education opportunities to the indigenous Dumagat community. It granted full scholarships to deserving Dumagat students. However, GMEFI ceased operation in 2020, just before the global pandemic and due to financial unsustainability.
What GMEFI initiated with the SSMESI, and the MMC Community Extension Services Department (MMC CES) was pursued and continued with the help of the College of Education Graduate Studies Department and Basic Education Department. In March, 2020, the time Covid-19 was declared, the MMC Classroom for the Dumagat learners was built. GMEFI, donated generous amount before its dissolution. Built not just for holding classes, it serves as a shelter for the Dumagats during the rainy season and during raging typhoons.
Lead IP teacher Michael Lauta, delivered learning modules to the learners at the Punduhan. Ms. Dulce Dela Rosa, then a volunteer student-teacher from the College of Education who enjoyed a scholarship at MMC and a Dumagat herself tutored the learners. On June 24, 2023, then 35-years-old, Ms. Dela Rosa, finally became the first Dumagat tribe member college graduate from Doña Remedios Trinidad, Bulacan, to hold the Bachelor of Elementary Education (BEED) from MMC.
To this day, MMC continues its commitment to provide Free Basic Education to the Dumagats at the Punduhan in Norzagaray, Bulacan.
For many, this may be an unfamiliar part of MMC’s history. For us at the Museum and Library, it is a reminder that the legacy of MMC has never been confined to its campus—it has always been about bringing education where it is needed.
The National Indigenous Peoples Month is celebrated annually throughout October in the Philippines under Proclamation No. 1906 to honor the country's Indigenous Cultural Communities (ICCs) and Indigenous Peoples (IPs).
