Big devolution news for the Thames Valley - and what it could mean for Windsor and Maidenhead.

Council leaders across Oxfordshire, Berkshire and Swindon have agreed to develop plans for a new Strategic Authority, potentially bringing a Thames Valley Mayor in 2028.

So, what’s in it for us?

Done well, devolution could mean more local control over transport, a stronger voice with Government and access to long-term investment for our communities.

Just look at Greater Manchester’s Bee Network, bringing buses together with capped fares. We should be looking at how we can achieve similar improvements across our region.

But there are important concerns. Simon Werner, Leader of RBWM, joined Oxfordshire County Council Leader Tim Bearder in highlighting issues around the exclusion of Buckinghamshire, the impact on public services, the scale of change alongside local government reorganisation, and the very short deadline councils were given to respond.

Devolution should mean local areas having a real say in their future, not simply accepting boundaries dictated by Whitehall.

There is a genuine opportunity here, but agreeing to develop proposals doesn’t mean signing up to every detail. The next stage must involve proper scrutiny and meaningful engagement with residents and the services affected.

One final clarification: this is separate from local government reorganisation (LGR), which replaces county and district councils with new unitary councils. RBWM is already a unitary authority. A Strategic Authority would operate across the wider region, with the potential for new powers and funding.
