Tackling the NEET Crisis Together in Islington! 💫

Did you know that nationally, almost one million young people are not in education, employment or training (NEET)?

Here in Islington, the picture is particularly stark. Despite being home to one of London’s largest job markets, around 3,000 young people are NEET, and research shows that young people growing up in the borough face some of the highest risks of becoming disconnected from education and employment.

Impetus (Impetus ) local authority data shows that the group of young people facing the highest NEET likelihood in Islington are those from disadvantaged backgrounds, young people who have SEND and young people with low qualifications.

According to Impetus’ research, young people who have all three of these characteristics face a ‘triple jeopardy’ and are at significantly higher risk of long-term unemployment.

Read our latest article on our recent event where we brought together leaders from business, community organisations and the public sector at Linklaters to discuss one of the most urgent challenges facing our borough: how we create better pathways into work for young people.

Thank you again to our partner Linklaters, our speakers Rachel Engel, Regional Director, Macquarie Group; Hamish Mackay, Head of Inclusive Growth, Islington Council; Ayesha Ahmed, Head of Youth Employment Policy, Impetus; and Gary Richefond, Founder, People’s Place Community Partnership, and isaac, award-winning presenter, creator and youth consultant, for expertly chairing!

What happens when young people have a say in where funding goes?💸

Our Young Grant Makers Report 2025 shares our experiences, insights and learnings in shaping a more inclusive approach to funding in Islington.

2025 marked the seventh year of the Young Grant Makers (YGM) programme, working with a group of young people aged 16-25, facilitated by two former Young Grant Makers, Freya Johnson and Kezia Adewale.

This programme is part of our developing work to include more residents in making decisions about how our funds are used in the borough. We know that local people have extensive experience of using local services, they know where there are gaps in provision, and what kind of projects can meet the needs of their peers.

Over the years, Young Grant Makers have taught us so much about the needs of younger people in the borough, the work we fund and how we can go about it in a more inclusive way. This year’s cohort were no different.

With thanks to Esmée Fairbairn Foundation and Linklaters for funding the programme, and to our Islington Giving Coalition Partners for making it possible.

We’ve just welcomed our new cohort of Young Grant Makers for this year’s programme. We’re excited to see what they’ll bring, challenge and change. We’ll share an update soon! 👀

What happens when you create a space where men feel they can truly be themselves and connect with each other? 🫂💚

This World Mental Health Day, we’re shining a light on “The Mandem”, a space fostering a community of men that support and celebrate one another, founded in 2018 by artist Francis Augusto.

Supporting men’s mental health and wellbeing is vital and can be life changing. Around three in four su***de deaths registered in England and Wales were male. Behind every statistic is a person, a family and a community affected by loss.

Loneliness can compound these challenges: one in five men in England reported feeling lonely at least some of the time in 2024, and men are much less likely access and be referred to psychological therapies than women. Stigma, cultural expectations and pressure to appear strong can also make it difficult to speak openly about mental health.

The Mandem doesn’t claim to be the solution and doesn’t try to be. They are a space where men can have conversations about being a man, masculinity and mental health. This in turn fosters vital support, community connection, a sense of belonging and can inspire more thoughts towards therapy, loneliness and masculinity.

At their Link-Up events at Better Space, men from all walks of life come together to watch films, share food, play games and, most importantly, have honest conversations about what it means to be a man today, including masculinity and mental health.

Islington Giving is proud to support The Mandem’s monthly Link-Ups at Better Space London.

We will be publishing about The Mandem including the “Dad’s Walk” initiative soon.

💜 Do have a project idea that could make a real difference to people’s mental health and wellbeing? Have a look at our Make it Happen fund – small grants for big ideas. The next deadline to apply is Monday 12th October 2026. Apply at the link in our bio or stories!

“A million young people are waking up this morning in the UK with nowhere to go and nothing to do” - Rachel Engel, Macquarie Group

In an increasingly challenging labour market, how can we work together in Islington to ensure young people have accessible pathways to work?

What role do corporates play? The council? Community organisations? And how can we better use data to understand the nuances of the barriers that hold young people back in our specific place?

These were some of the big questions our panel - Rachel Engel, Hamish Mackay, Ayesha Baloch and Gary Richefond tackled yesterday on stage at Linklaters, moderated masterfully by 18-year-old youth consultant, Isaac Kamidiora - isaac 💡

💡The key takeaways?

• Ensure young people know what’s out there - opportunities and support are no good if no one knows about them.” - Gary Richefond
• “Pay for it” - Don’t reinvent the wheel. Invest in already established programmes that have proven impact. - Rachel Engel
• Don’t be afraid to start small, and don’t go it alone. Work in partnership with the organisations that know and understand young people. - Hamish Mackay
• Make sure those young people furthest from the labour market don’t get forgotten, and look at what’s already working. There are amazing programmes to learn from. - Ayesha Baloch

We will be publishing a blog on the insights from the panel soon.
