Happy Father's Day to all the amazing dads working for our service! 🧑🏻‍🚒

Not only do you do an incredible job helping to protect the people of County Durham and Darlington every day and night of the year, you are also inspiring parents who are making your children proud.

Congratulations to Mandy Dixon who has been recognised by the King for her work to keep people safe from fire across the UK.👑

Mandy has been part of the fire service family for 37 years and her dedication has seen her presented with The King’s Fire Service Medal as part of The King’s Birthday Honours List 2026.

She started her career in Durham as a fire control operator answering emergency calls and then worked in Learning and Development, Business Improvement and Risk Information. 🚒

Five years ago, she joined the Home Office on secondment and has since played a key role in addressing communication challenges identified by the Grenfell Tower Inquiry.

The Group Manager has worked alongside the National Fire Chiefs Council to help develop national guidance for handling 999 calls and contributed to a system that distributes calls across fire control rooms during major incidents.

She also supported the rollout of Multi-Agency Incident Transfer across English fire services and now works with the Fire Service Operational Communications Team at The Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government.

🗨️ Mandy, who remains on secondment, said: “I’m delighted and a little overwhelmed to have received the King’s Fire Service Medal.”

“Over the years, I have been fortunate enough to have worked alongside some amazing and dedicated people whose commitment makes a difference every day.”🫶

Over 60% of all the accidental house fires our firefighters attended between January to December last year started in the kitchen.

Plan how you’re getting home before you head out to watch a match and never be tempted to have even just one drink if you’re the designated driver.

That's our warning to anyone thinking of going into open water such as rivers and lakes to cool off on hot days or just to impress your friends.

This Drowning Prevention Week we're urging you to not take the risk as the water can be cold enough to affect your breathing and movement.

There are also hidden dangers such as strong currents which can affect event the strongest of swimmers.

There have been so many tragic water deaths this year. Don't let it be you.

Our Service has once again been recognised among the top apprentice employers in the UK by The Sunday Times! 👏

We have been named in the respected newspaper’s Top 100 Apprenticeship Employers for 2026.

The list recognises employers' commitment to creating new apprenticeships, the diversity of their apprentices, and the number of apprentices who successfully complete their apprenticeships.

CDDFRS comes in at number 78 in the prestigious national rankings, which have been compiled by High Fliers Research for The Sunday Times.

We launched our Operational Apprenticeship Programme in 2017 and have gone on to train over 80 new firefighters. 🧑‍🚒

Our latest cohort of apprentice firefighters completed their training in December 2025 and are already working on stations across the Service.

We also deliver apprenticeships for both corporate staff at entry, supervisory, and middle and strategic management levels in areas including Business Analysis and Operations Management.

🗨️ Cheryl Porter, Learning and Development Manager at CDDFRS, said: “We have been offering new and existing staff the opportunity to undertake apprenticeships to support their career for almost a decade.

“The recognition from The Sunday Times reflects the value we place on developing our people.

“Thank you to all our apprentices, past and present, and to all the managers that support our programmes for your hard work, dedication, and commitment.

“Your efforts make a huge difference, and we wouldn't have reached the 78th ranking without your support and contribution.”

There have been so many tragic water deaths across the UK this year.

This Drowning Prevention Week, we're urging people not to risk going into open water. 🧑‍🚒

Our firefighters rescued 13 people from the water across County Durham and Darlington last year, three of which tragically died.

Please don't put yourself in danger.

Never enter the water to help someone in trouble.

🚒Instead, PHONE 999 and ask for the fire and rescue service.

🚒Tell the person to FLOAT on their back with their ears under the water and to use their hands to stay afloat.

🚒THROW them something that floats such as a life ring, if nearby.

🚒Remember: 'Float to live’ if you find yourself in trouble.

The World Cup kicks off tomorrow and we're urging fans to never drive under the influence of drink or drugs. ⚽

Our crews and colleagues from the police and ambulance service have see first-hand the tragic impact this can have when they are called out to road traffic collisions.

In fact, our data has shown there has been a 20.9% spike in road traffic collisions on England match days during the Euros and World Cup (2016–2024). 🚒

We're asking supporters to not risk having even one drink if they are planning on driving somewhere to watch the match.

Leave your car keys at home if you're planning to have a drink.

Either be the designated driver and stick to non-alcoholic drinks or plan your transport home beforehand.

Remember, even if you have been drinking the night before you may still be affected the next day.

Don't take the risk.
