This week is Remember a Charity Week, and we can't think of a better time to remember our wonderful volunteer, Margaret Lauder. 💚

Margaret first got involved with us back in 2007, when we were still known as Bobath Children's Therapy Centre Wales, after reading in the paper that we were struggling to meet demand. But her connection to our cause ran far deeper than that. Margaret was herself a mother of two children with cerebral palsy, and over 30 years earlier she faced the heartbreak of losing both her sons before they turned two. Support like ours simply didn't exist for families like hers back then.

Rather than let that grief define her, Margaret turned it into action - reaching out to ask how she could help. Over the next 15 years, she organised sponsored walks, fundraising events and countless car boot sales, always saying that one day we should open a charity shop. In 2010, that dream became a reality with our first shop in Llanishen, Cardiff - and Margaret was right there as part of the core volunteer team.

In total, Margaret raised over £20,000 for our charity. And in her final act of generosity, she left a gift in her Will to Cerebral Palsy Cymru, ensuring her legacy will continue to support children and families for years to come.

Gifts in Wills like Margaret's help us grow our services so we can reach more babies and children who need our care. Every gift, whatever the size, makes a real difference - even 1% of an estate (so loved ones still inherit 99%) can help provide for a child's future.

If you'd like to chat about leaving a gift in your Will to Cerebral Palsy Cymru, please get in touch with Emma, our Trusts & Individual Giving Manager, at [email protected] or 029 2052 8104.

Thank you, Margaret, for everything you gave us.

On the move!

Preparing your child for school can be more than getting their uniform and school bag ready. It can also be ensuring your child has the right support to be able to move, explore, play and join in.🧑‍🦽

A school day involves lots of different activities, and children may need different ways to move throughout the day. They might walk or stand for some activities, use a walker for others, or use a wheelchair or powered mobility to travel further or move more efficiently.

Having a range of the right mobility options can help children learn, connect, play and take part in everyday moments, like:

⭐ Playing with a friend
⭐ Exploring the classroom
⭐ Joining in playground games
⭐ Accessing the toilet
⭐ Moving around independently

These everyday moments are about more than simply getting from A to B, they’re about having the freedom to move, explore and participate.

Let’s give children the right mobility options for the right activity, so they can be where they want to be, doing what they want to do.

If you’re thinking about your child starting or returning to school and would like some specialist support, our private therapy service can give you the opportunity to talk through your child’s needs, ask questions and explore practical ideas to support their movement and participation in everyday life.

Using signing to get ready for school!

Starting school means encountering lots of new words, people, places and routines.

Using signs alongside spoken language can provide an additional visual cue to support children’s understanding, vocabulary and communication.

In this short video, our Speech and Language Therapist, Helen, shows us some key signs.

Try using these signs naturally when you are talking together about school - getting dressed, packing their school bag, travelling to school, meeting the teacher or seeing friends.

Simply say it and sign it as part of your everyday conversation.

Small communication supports can make new experiences feel more familiar, predictable and accessible. 🌟
