Having enjoyed visiting National Trust properties for many years with my family, when I retired I decided that I would like to volunteer at our local property, The Vyne.

As well as volunteering in Visitor Reception I have thoroughly enjoyed helping with Easter and Halloweโ€™en trails, theatre evenings, and even operating the buildersโ€™ hoist during the roof project a few years ago!

When volunteering Iโ€™ve been most proud or moved when visitors mention, as they leave, how much theyโ€™ve enjoyed their visit, particularly how the staff and volunteers have made their visit so special. To me, that is the essence of being part of the National Trust.

Helping in Visitor Reception, there is usually only one volunteer working alongside the staff. I feel very fortunate to be part of a wonderful team who are so friendly, supportive and inclusive.

In 2011, I saw an article in the local Basingstoke Gazette which was asking for people to become volunteers at The Vyne. I was working part time as an accountant so had some spare time.

I have also always been very interested in history, so I applied. Initially I was a Room Guide volunteer, which was really interesting and I learnt a lot about the history and stories of The Vyne.

Following a hip replacement operation later that year, the volunteer manager at the time suggested I help out in the Central Team which dealt with all volunteer related admin, queries etc and also required less standing in a cold room!

I have been in the Central Team ever since so must be doing something right! It is also great for keeping the old grey cells active!

One of the most exciting events I have witnessed at The Vyne was the epic roof project. It was fascinating to see The Vyne from a completely different aspect. It was such a huge hit with the visitors too. It even persuaded my husband to become a roof guide volunteer.

Me and my family made roof tiles with our names and hand prints on and we are very proud to know that they are somewhere on the roof of The Vyne, hopefully for many years to come.

It has to be my fellow Central Team volunteers Christine and Anthea and of course our lovely Volunteer Manager Caroline.

We all bring our own unique qualities and strengths to the team which in turn means we work really well together and support each other. Also, I am probably biased, but I think we have the best Volunteer Manager (Caroline) at The Vyne!

I retired in 2019 and for a while I considered the idea of some form of volunteering work but couldn't decide if it was really for me. Then during the pandemic in 2020 an opportunity arose to become a Covid volunteer and I got involved.

Whilst it was a very scary time, I found the whole volunteer experience very enjoyable and extremely rewarding. Once the pandemic had passed I was keen to find another volunteering role.

By this time my wife had also retired and achieved a long-time ambition to be a room guide for the National Trust at The Vyne. She told me that they were looking for new volunteers in several different departments and I should have a look at the website to see what was available.

So as I had a background in construction I applied for a position in the Facilities department and started a few weeks later.

I thoroughly enjoy working at The Vyne and every day is different, but the best part is the team spirit and cooperation between the different departments - two things which are very difficult to find in the modern corporate world.

I would say that the only way to find out if it is for you is to give it a go. You don't have to make a large commitment, you can give as much or as little time as your everyday life allows, but whatever you do it will be valued and very much appreciated. You will meet people from very different walks of life and make many new friends along the way.

As Volunteersโ€™ Week (1โ€“7 June) highlights the many roles across our portfolio, we visited Sandham Memorial Chapel to meet Sue, a Bookshop Volunteer who has found friendship, purpose and creative inspiration in this extraordinary place. She shared how volunteering has shaped her first year with the chapelโ€™s community.

Since I retired in 2024 after spending the last 25 years in the legal profession, I was looking for volunteering opportunities. I went to a Volunteer Fayre in Newbury at the beginning of 2025 and this led me to the Sandham Memorial Chapel.

I instantly felt it was the right place for me. I have always felt very well supported by the staff and my fellow volunteers here which has given me a feeling of emotional wellbeing and belonging and has forged real friendships.

Welcoming and interacting with our wonderful visitors in my favourite spot, Visitor Reception, gives me a great sense of satisfaction. I always leave at the end of my shift with a smile of my face and feeling that my mood has been lifted. Sandham Memorial Chapel is an amazing space to be inspired creatively and I have helped with some re-organisation of the exhibition space and also in the creation of our guided walks as a new activity for our visitors to enjoy in 2026.

I love the story of how it was a chance meeting of artist Stanley Spencer and his future patrons, the Behrends, that led to the building of Sandham Memorial Chapel. If Stanley Spencer hadn't been staying with his good friend, Henry Lamb, who he met whilst at the Slade Art School in London, the chapel would probably never have been built.

When the Behrends visited that day they had no idea that they would soon be agreeing to fund a very expensive and unique project - one of the very few buildings ever built explicitly to house a specific work of art. Stanley Spencer was a very unique and difficult character and our visitors are keen to hear about all aspects of his life.

If my own experience has been anything to go by I would absolutely encourage them to do it. Even at a small site like Sandham there are different roles that should suit everyone: chapel guides, Visitor Reception, the gardening team and walk volunteers.

The volunteers add so much to the visitors' experience, but equally the volunteers gain so much from our visitors who come with such interesting stories relating both to Stanley Spencer and the Salonika Campaign of the First World War where Spencer served both as a medical orderly and a soldier.

I would encourage anyone to volunteer as itโ€™s such a great way of giving back to the places that I visited when I was working and gave so much to me. It is so worthwhile and I don't think anyone will regret it.
