We are absolutely elated to hear this incredible news. Thank you to Squamish SAR and all of the SAR teams, first responders and volunteers who worked tirelessly and never gave up hope.

After several days missing in incredibly rugged terrain, Stanislav walked himself out. This will be one extraordinary survival story, and we cannot wait to hear it.

We know so many people across Squamish, the Sea to Sky, and beyond have been following his story, sharing our posts, sending messages, and hoping alongside his family.

Today, we get to share the news we’ve all been waiting for.

3 Blasts - The humble whistle

There is a tiny piece of safety equipment hanging from many hiking backpacks that people rarely think about.

A whistle.

In fact, take a look at your backpack. Many modern hiking packs have one built directly into the sternum-strap buckle. You may have been carrying a safety whistle for years without realizing it.

If yours doesn't have one, add one.

They're inexpensive. They weigh almost nothing. They don't require batteries or cell service. From the perspective of people who actually search for missing hikers, whistles work.

WHEN WE'RE SEARCHING FOR YOU

Ground searching involves a lot of listening.

Search teams will stop, call out and listen for a response. Then we move, stop and do it again.

If you're the person we're looking for, the problem is that your voice isn't actually a particularly powerful signalling device.

There is some fascinating research on this. A 2024 Canadian study published in the Journal of Search & Rescue measured how far loud human voices could be understood in wilderness forest. The people calling were producing approximately 88–89 decibels at one metre.

The average distance at which their words remained intelligible was about 98 metres in coniferous forest and 135 metres in deciduous forest. Under some of the conditions tested, once searchers were beyond approximately 200 metres, they couldn't hear the caller at all.

Wind and ambient noise make an enormous difference. So does which direction you're facing.

Now imagine you're the missing person.

Your phone died hours ago. Darkness has fallen. You're cold and exhausted. Maybe you've injured yourself. Somewhere through the forest you think you hear Search and Rescue calling.

So you start yelling.

HELP!

Again.

HELP!

Your voice gets weaker. Your throat gets sore. The search team may still be hundreds of metres away.

This is where that tiny piece of plastic on your backpack becomes incredibly valuable.

Blow your whistle.

A Fox 40 Classic, for example, is rated at approximately 115 decibels. The manufacturer says it can be heard up to a mile away under suitable conditions.

Real mountains are obviously more complicated than a specification sheet. Wind, waterfalls, terrain, vegetation and atmospheric conditions all affect how sound travels.

But the underlying physics is pretty simple:

A good whistle is considerably louder than your voice and requires far less effort to produce that sound.

The SAR research itself notes that whistles typically have a greater detection range than shouting. That can matter enormously when we're trying to find you.

THREE BLASTS = HELP

Three short whistle blasts are a distress signal.

Blow three times. Pause. Listen. Repeat. Try signalling in different directions too — sound travels in strange ways in the mountains, bouncing off cliffs and terrain. Once we hear you, we'll follow the sound.

There's another reason the three-blast pattern matters. Every year, people report hearing a single whistle in the mountains that turns out to be wildlife. Varied Thrushes can sound remarkably like a distant whistle, and marmots whistle too. We investigate these reports, only to discover we've been sent on a wild goose chase.

So ask yourself: Did you hear three clear, deliberate blasts? If not, keep listening. It might be wildlife.

OTHER USES

Whistles are also incredibly useful mountain communication tools.

You might see a skier heading toward a hazard or an avalanche release above someone. A hiker may be walking toward dangerous terrain. A member of your group may be getting too far ahead. You may knock a rock loose above someone or simply need another person to STOP and look at you immediately.

Across an alpine slope, through forest, beside running water or in strong wind, yelling doesn't always work.

A sharp whistle blast often will.

Before everyone carried phones and small backcountry radios, whistles were one of the simplest ways climbers, mountaineers and rescue teams communicated over distance.

We still use them.

ROPE RESCUE & CLIMBING

In technical rope rescue and climbing, voice communication can become extremely difficult. Someone may be dozens of metres above or below you, around an edge and completely out of sight.

Add wind, waterfalls and steep terrain, and shouted commands can quickly become unreliable.

One whistle system we use in rope rescue is SUDO. The position of the letter tells you how many blasts:

1 — S — STOP
2 — U — UP
3 — D — DOWN
4 — O — OFF ROPE

It's brilliantly simple: four commands communicated with nothing more than sound.

Of course, today we also have radios. We love small backcountry radios like Rocky Talkies because being able to actually talk to your partners is enormously useful.

But not everyone has one, and radios don't make whistles obsolete.

Batteries die. Electronics fail. Radios get dropped. Sometimes you don't need to have a conversation.

You just need someone to hear you.

GET A GOOD ONE — AND PUT IT WHERE YOU CAN REACH IT

For mountain travel, a loud pealess whistle is ideal. With no moving ball inside, there is nothing to freeze or jam. We recommend a Fox 40 or similar loud pealess whistle as part of your backcountry equipment.

Clip it to your helmet, shoulder strap or somewhere else you can reach immediately. Don't bury it at the bottom of your pack.

Some backpacks even have small whistles built directly into the sternum-strap buckle — check yours to see if you already have one.

Everyone in your group should have their own because the person who becomes separated may not be the person carrying the group's emergency equipment.

When your phone is dead, it's dark, you're sitting somewhere in the forest and Search and Rescue is out there calling your name, you'll be very glad you have one.

Three blasts. Pause. Listen. Repeat. Make yourself heard.

HOW TO HIKE IN A COASTAL DOWNPOUR

Yes, you're wearing your gaiters wrong.

Fall is coming to the Coast Mountains, and with it comes something we know very well: RAIN – lots of it.

Not the polite kind of rain where you put on a shell and carry on. We're talking about hours of sustained rain, saturated trails, dripping forest, soaked blueberry bushes, slippery logs, and alpine heather that can feel like it's been covered in Vaseline.

Good rain gear matters, and staying dry and moving safely in these conditions has some special tricks.

#1 OVER OR UNDER?

If you said gaiters over your pants, think again.

Most of us are accustomed to seeing gaiters worn over our pants. That makes perfect sense for snow travel, where their primary job is keeping snow from getting into our boots.

Heavy rain changes the equation.

In a Coastal downpour, your gaiters go UNDER your rain pants. Think about shingles on a roof. Every layer overlaps the layer below so gravity carries water down and away allowing water to run down and away from your boots.

Put your gaiters on first, then pull your waterproof pants over the top of them.

Rain jacket → rain pants → gaiters → boots.

If you put the gaiter over your rain pants, you've created an opportunity for water running down your leg to enter through the top of the gaiter. From there, it has only one direction to go.

Straight toward your boot.

Once water gets inside a waterproof boot, Gore-Tex isn't going to save you. You've essentially created a very expensive bucket.

Snow: gaiters over your pants.
Heavy rain: gaiters under your rain pants.

#2 MICROSPIKES AREN'T JUST FOR SNOW

Here's another one of our favourite tricks: we carry microspikes year-round in mountain terrain.

The microspike points bite through wet vegetation and into the soft ground underneath, providing additional traction on steep wet heather in morning dew or rain, slippery blueberry slopes, muddy trails and ultra-steep descents. They can also be extremely useful for wet log crossings where the spikes can bite into the wood.

One important exception: take them off on hard rock and in boulder fields. Microspikes need something they can bite into. On solid rock, rounded metal points can reduce traction rather than improve it. Use them where they can bite. Remove them where they can't.

For us, microspikes are a year-round tool. Even in summer, they bite beautifully into our soft, loamy trails and can provide excellent traction on steep dirt and pine-needle-covered descents. Snow or no snow, they stay in our mountain packs.

#3 GET YOUR HIKING POLES OUT

Wet conditions are also when hiking poles really earn their place in your pack.

Traction is only part of preventing a fall. Balance matters too.

Poles give you two additional points of contact with the ground and let you test questionable surfaces before committing your full weight. They become even more valuable after hours in the rain, when you're tired and your footing becomes less precise.

If you have bad knees, or you're facing one of those classic 1,500–2,000 metre Coast Mountain descents, poles do even more than help with balance. Research has shown they can reduce the forces through your knees and lower legs by up to 25% during downhill hiking, taking some of the punishment off long descents.

Four points of contact are often better than two.

FALL CHANGES HOW WE MOVE

Get the gaiters, microspikes and poles out. All three will help you stay out there comfortably for hours, move more confidently through wet terrain, and help prevent slips and falls.

It's about to get wet - enjoy the change of seasons.

A Dropped Pack Changes Everything on the West Lion

Last night, Lions Bay Search and Rescue responded to a stranded hiker on the Howe Sound Crest Trail after an unusual accident on the West Lion turned a successful day in the mountains into an overnight rescue.

The hiker was experienced, with approximately 76 local peaks under his belt. He had successfully summited the West Lion and was descending when he stopped to take a break.

He put his 45-litre red backpack down and it fell off the cliffs and down the mountain. With it went almost everything he needed to get home safely: his Garmin inReach, bear spray, warm layers and, critically, his headlamp.

Suddenly, a successful summit day had become a very different situation. Without a headlamp, he knew he could not safely continue after dark. At approximately 6:45 p.m., he triggered an Apple Emergency SOS on his phone via satellite.

Locating him and accessing him, however, became complicated.

The coordinates received through the Apple SOS system placed him on Mount Unnecessary North. We asked for the coordinates to be reconfirmed and received essentially the same location. It was not where he was.

It’s important to understand that a cellphone location is not always a precise point on a map. Under an open sky, a modern phone can locate you within just a few metres. But in steep mountain terrain, errors can become tens or hundreds of metres, and poor location fixes can sometimes be off by much more.

Accuracy depends heavily on how much of the sky your phone can see and the geometry of the satellites available to it. Mountains, cliffs and deep valleys can block satellite signals, while signals bouncing off rock faces can introduce additional errors.

If you continue moving after calling for rescue, even a good location can quickly become an old location. Once you’ve called for rescue, unless you need to move because you are in immediate danger, stay put. A stationary subject gives Search and Rescue a location to work toward; a moving subject can turn a rescue into a search.

A side note on terrain: although it wasn’t a factor in this rescue, East–West gullies and deep valleys can be particularly challenging for satellite positioning. If you are in one, take note and know that a satellite message can take more than 30-45min to get out.

The subject was cold, scared and reported a bear nearby. He was sitting in cloud and could hear the helicopter attempting to reach him. At one point, the sound of the helicopter faded away.

He thought we had abandoned him.

We want people to know this: we will not abandon you.

If you are waiting for rescue and hear a helicopter nearby and then it disappears, do not lose hope. It may mean the crew has encountered a cloud ceiling, strong winds or another condition that makes that approach unsafe. They may be looking for another landing or hover-exit location, or changing the rescue plan entirely.

In this case, we couldn't get the helicopter through the cloud to reach him. We initially hoped to fly rescuers to the Mount Unnecessary landing zone, but the low cloud ceiling prevented the helicopter from climbing above approximately 1,100 metres. After trying several approaches, the closest safe insertion we could achieve was a hover exit near Christmas Gully, near Cypress.

The plan changed from a direct air rescue to a ground response.

A three-person Lions Bay SAR team travelled up the Howe Sound Crest Trail via St. Mark’s Summit and Mount Unnecessary to reach the subject. Whistle blasts and voice calls finally located him on the trail at roughly 1,400 metres elevation.

By the time the team reached him, the weather had deteriorated considerably. Heavy rain had arrived, visibility was extremely poor and the trail was exceptionally slippery.

Rather than descend the steeper Mount Unnecessary trail toward Lions Bay in those conditions, the team made the decision to retrace the route to Cypress.

The rescuers and subject reached the Cypress parking lot at approximately 3:30 a.m.

There are a few good learning points from this task.

First, keep critical equipment attached to you whenever possible, or secure them to a tree. A single dropped backpack took away this hiker’s light, communication device, warm clothing and bear protection all at once.

Second, don’t hike alone. When something unexpected happens like an injury, a fall, lost equipment or rapidly changing weather — having a partner can completely change your options.

Third, check the cloud base as part of your trip planning. Low clouds can significantly limit where a helicopter can safely operate and may turn what could have been a relatively quick air response into hours of travel on foot. Our next post will explain how to check this before you head into the mountains.

Consider the entire weather window, not just the conditions when you start. Don’t take on a big objective with a small weather window and a week of rain moving in. Deteriorating weather doesn't just affect your ability to get yourself out — it can significantly affect our ability to get to you.

Finally, being experienced doesn’t prevent things from going wrong. What matters is recognizing when the situation has changed. This hiker did exactly that. He knew continuing without a headlamp wasn’t safe, stopped and called for help before darkness and worsening weather made the situation even more serious.

Earbuds & Bears: Keep One Ear Open

We love technology in the backcountry - GPS, satellite communicators, phones, headlamps, and watches. But there is one piece of technology we really don't recommend on the trail:

Noise-cancelling headphones.

As we move toward fall, bears are entering hyperphagia - the period when they dramatically increase their food intake in preparation for winter. A bear can consume up to 24,000 calories a day during this phase. They're spending a lot of time with their heads down,focused on food.

Which means, your situational awareness needs to be heightened and you need to be able to hear your environment. When you put on noise-cancelling headphones, you're deliberately removing one of your most important senses.

You may not hear an animal moving through the brush. You may not hear a bear huffing or moving nearby. You may not hear another hiker shouting a warning. You may not hear someone coming quickly down the trail, rockfall, a falling branch, or someone calling for help.

Furthermore, at times the environment is already working against you.

Creeks, rivers and waterfalls can be incredibly loud. Around moving water, you may already have difficulty hearing a bear — and the bear may have difficulty hearing you. The few times we've accidentally come upon bears, it's been near loud rivers. Now add noise-cancelling headphones and you've reduced that awareness even further.

If you really want music, a podcast or an audiobook while hiking, use one earbud and leave the other ear open. Better yet, pause it when travelling through dense vegetation, berry patches, areas with poor visibility, around loud water, or anywhere you're seeing fresh wildlife signs.

Carry bear spray somewhere you can reach it quickly, and know how to use it.

A portable speaker
On a busy trail, nobody really wants to listen to three different competing playlists. People head into the wilderness partly to get away from the noise of everyday life. Be courteous to the people around you. Blasting music from a Bluetooth speaker will create noise, but it's not very courteous to others.

Use your senses

Your eyes, ears and attention are some of your most important backcountry safety equipment. Use them - especially now, when bears are focused on feeding and preparing for winter.

If you choose to listen to something on the trail, leave one ear open to the mountain.

MISSING HIKER — SQUAMISH

Squamish Search and Rescue and Squamish RCMP are searching for 43-year-old Stanislav Volo, who was last seen at the summit of the Sea to Sky Gondola at approximately 11:30 a.m. on Sunday, August 30.

Lions Bay Search and Rescue will be joining the search tomorrow, deploying drone teams, Mountain Rescue teams, and Ground Search and Rescue teams to assist Squamish Search and Rescue.

Stanislav was planning to hike from the gondola summit toward the Habrich climbers’ access trail, traverse the ridge, and return to the gondola summit via Al’s Habrich Trail.

He was last seen wearing:

- Black T-shirt

- Shorts

- Small backpack

Were you hiking or climbing in this area on Sunday?

Searchers are asking anyone who was on the Habrich trails, ridge, or surrounding area to think back to whether they may have seen Stanislav. Even a brief sighting could help establish his direction of travel and timeline.

THE MOUNTAIN PACT

Woman left behind. Injured hiker left alone while the group tags the summit. Hiker falls behind. Group keeps going. Friends separate on the trail. One doesn't come home.

We've all seen the stories. You've seen Search and Rescue teams post about it. You've read the comments: "How could anyone do that?" "I would NEVER leave my friend behind."

And yet it keeps happening.

So instead of another lecture about staying together, let's talk about why this happens.

Research into group dynamics gives us an important starting point:

A GROUP IS NOT A TEAM.

A group is simply people travelling together. A team has to be built.

This is particularly important with online hiking groups. Eight strangers meeting at a trailhead with the same destination may have completely different fitness levels, risk tolerances, experience and expectations of leadership — even different ideas about what "stay together" means.

Teams that work together develop what researchers call a shared mental model: a common understanding of the objective, the plan, everyone's responsibilities and what happens when circumstances change.

So if you're heading on a significant trip with people you don't regularly hike with, build that BEFORE you leave.

Have a Zoom or in-person meeting. Put up the map. Discuss the route, pace, weather, communications and exit routes. Who is leading? Who navigates? Who has first aid? Who carries satellite communications?

Most importantly: What happens if someone can't continue?

If your group leader hasn't organized this conversation, offer to start one yourself. The emergency plan shouldn't begin when the emergency does.

And stop normalizing splitting up.

"I'll go ahead and set up camp." No. You wait.

"I'm slower. I'll catch up." No. The group slows down.

"You wait here. We're just going to tag the summit." Absolutely not.

PEOPLE OVER PEAKS. The objective never comes before your team.

If you're organizing the trip, the standard is even higher. Leadership isn't about being the fastest or strongest person. Leadership IS responsibility. If you assemble a group and ask people to follow you into consequential terrain, you have accepted responsibility for the safety and well-being of that group.

And here's something we'd like to see hikers start doing:

THE MOUNTAIN PACT

Next time you start a hike with a group, stand in a circle. Put your hands together in the middle and say this out loud, together:

We walk together.
We rise together.
We turn back together.
We come home together.

I won't leave you.
I know you won't leave me.

It might feel a little ceremonial. That's the point. This is your oath to one another. You're about to trust these people with something considerably more important than whether you reach a summit. You're trusting them with your life.

Normalize it.

But don't blindly trust your safety to strangers either. Vet the people you're travelling with. Carry your own essential equipment. Know the route and forecast. Know how to navigate, survive an unexpected night and call for help.

Your group is another layer of your safety system. It should never be your entire safety system.

Be self-reliant. Don't be selfish.
