Tournament for the Rector's Cup of the War Studies University in Rapid Chess – June 4, 2025
On June 4, 2025, a rapid chess tournament for the Rector’s Cup of the War Studies University (ASzWoj) was held at the University Club. The main goals of this event were to promote chess within the academic and military communities, foster integration and friendly competition among our players, and allow participants to gain new experiences on the 64 squares of the chessboard.
Competitors from different generations battled for victory — from prominent professors and senior officers to doctoral candidates, full-time students, and Erasmus+ participants. The international presence of the latter group elevated the tournament to a truly global level. These warriors courageously competed in two categories: students — the youngest adepts of this bloodless battle of enduring minds — and the more experienced military personnel and soldiers.
The chess world often debates whether youthful sharpness of mind or accumulated experience wins in intergenerational duels. A classic example of the former is Kasparov's victory in the World Championship over his predecessor Karpov, who was nearly twice his age. This tournament, however, offered a compelling case for the value of experience — as evidenced by the top three places being taken by older players. The international FIDE rating system (ELO), which measures playing strength, did not disappoint: the podium was occupied by the tournament’s highest-rated players.
A notable surprise came from a player from Turkey , who took third place in the student category — his first experience in a chess tournament. He will return to his country with a bronze medal and a trophy — a beautiful keepsake from Poland.
The equal number of points achieved by all medalists in the student category — mainly composed of AZS Chess Club players — shows how evenly matched the competition was. The final medal positions were determined by the Buchholz tiebreak system.
The official final standings are available on the tournament’s website:

Rapid Chess Tournament for the Rector's Cup – ASzWoj Community
The event was organized through the joint efforts of the Department of Physical Education and Sport, the Center for Simulation and Computer War Games, the ASzWoj Club, and the Faculty of Military Studies. The tournament arbiter was State-Class Referee Cdr. Mirosław Niedźwiecki. We extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone involved!
We warmly congratulate the winners and wish them continued success in the world of sports. All participants and interested individuals are invited to attend AZS ASzWoj Chess Club sessions, which take place regularly on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 15:00 to 16:30 (for more information, contact the Department of Physical Education and Sport). For those who decide to join, a lifelong adventure awaits — one that leads through the paths of knowledge, intelligence, perseverance, experience, and battling one's own limitations under time pressure. It is also a great opportunity to practice English among Erasmus+ students who are actively engaged in the chess life of our university.
