The Canadian Beef Cattle Check-Off is a mandatory levy on cattle in Canada, invested into research,

The Canadian Beef Cattle Check-Off is a mandatory levy of $1 per head collected on cattle sales throughout Canada to fund research and marketing activities on behalf of the entire industry. It is collected from cattle producers when they market their cattle by provincial organizations, using their existing collection systems involving auction markets, order buyers, brand inspectors and others who handle cattle sales. The goal of the Canadian Beef Cattle Check-Off is twofold – to increase sales of domestic and export beef and to find better and more efficient methods of producing beef and beef cattle. The Canadian Beef Cattle Check-Off generates $7.5 million annual on average, and is a critical source of revenue to fund initiatives that will advance the industry and build strong markets for Canadian cattle and beef. The Canadian Beef Cattle Check-Off provides industry funding for the Beef Cattle Research Council responsible for the industry’s national research program as well as funding for Canada Beef. The Canadian Beef Cattle Check-Off also collects an Import Levy, equivalent to $1 per head of live cattle on beef and beef products. Import levy dollars are invested into generic beef programs that do not bear the Canadian Beef Brandmark, such as culinary skills, and health and wellness.

The Canadian Beef Check-Off Agency is governed by a 16-member Board of Directors, plus one non-voting youth member, representing the industry it serves. The Agency also reports to the Farm Products Council of Canada, providing oversight and accountability in how check-off funds are managed.

Your check-off at work: Annual consumer research from the Public and Stakeholder Engagement program found that 90 percent of Canadians agree beef is safe, 86 percent agree it is healthy, and 79 percent agree the industry treats animals humanely. It also found that 74 percent see beef as an environmentally friendly food choice, up 14 percentage points since 2023.

Your check-off at work: The Beef Cattle Research Council (BCRC) received an average of $0.66 from every $2.50 in national check-off in 2025/26. Outside the Beef Science Cluster, BCRC leveraged those dollars into an additional $4.97 million in research funding and $89,000 of in-kind support from government and industry partners.

Meet Ryan Trefiak, our 2026 Canadian Beef Check-Off Agency Scholarship winner.

A fourth-generation cattle producer from Edgerton, Alberta, Ryan is heading to Iowa State University this fall to study Agricultural Systems Technologies, with his sights set on bringing precision agriculture and data systems back to the Canadian beef industry.

Get to know Ryan Trefiak 🎤

A fourth-generation producer from MJT Cattle Company in Edgerton, Alberta, Ryan grew up showing Hereford, Angus, and Charolais cattle, starting with his very first show heifers, Cheetah and Rosebud.

Since then, he's become a Canadian Junior Angus and Junior Hereford member, a 4-H club treasurer and vice president, and a five-time Calgary Stampede International Youth Scholar.

This fall, he's off to Iowa State University to study Agricultural Systems Technologies, and he plans to bring it all back home to Edgerton and MJT.
